Oilers headed for another No. 1 pick

07:40 AM ET 11.15 | GM Craig MacTavish made this much clear first to his team and then the media on Thursday: Sit tight. There will be no trading of the core eight or nine players on the Edmonton Oilers who are 24 years and younger. There will be no firing of new coach Dallas Eakins. There are deals to be done right now to help solve short term problems but they are not in the long term interest of the Oilers and won't be made. Expect Edmonton to use their first round draft choice -- which could possibly be another No.1 overall if you look at the current standings -- to make a deal for a significant piece to the puzzle as soon as possible instead of drafting another 18-year-old to add to the collection already assembled. ... [MacTavish] went out of his way Thursday to make those statements and to put the focus on himself.

Another "hold the presses" moment for the Edmonton Sun! Mac T is on a very short leash - I hope - to turn this around. Even a blind squirrel would have stumbled across some nuts by now.

I don't know how they haven't offered a first for hometown boy Celine yet.

The can't afford her wardrobe. Anyway, they've tried hometown boys before <Lupul> and didn't really work out.

My thinking is they should consider swapping no. 1's with someone and also get a nice player in the deal, since the primo picks they get each year are not helping from a team standpoint

Kinda ironic the "Centre of the Universe" doesn't have a centre.

<Nonis has already called Steven Hawking.>

Or maybe the Oilers brass need to have the entire team watch replays of Steven Stamkos and how a young gifted scorer plays defense. Bad result for Stamkos but more forwards with a clue how to play defense and help out in the d-zone would make the defensemen better which might even help out the goaltending. Right now they've got none of that. More players doing the same old thing is not the answer.

Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-a, wipeout

Situation normal, all........

It hurts to say they are one of my teams....

Can Hawking take draws?

Hawking has a motor neuron disease related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a condition that has progressed over the years. He is almost entirely paralysed and communicates through a speech generating device.

So the answer is.....about as well as any of the Leafs.

MacT: "Sit tight. There will be no trading of the core eight or nine players on the Edmonton Oilers who are 24 years and younger."

Which means that Oilers fans are cursed to watch lightweight smurfs being pushed around like cardboard cutouts for the next decade. Awesome.

He's found them but ... they're the wrong kind of nuts. He needs the variety that doesn't grow on trees or shrubs. ;-)
