Little room for Hand at 'Bama

07:38 AM ET 11.15 | After Thursday, Alabama is on its way to a clean sweep of No. 1 recruits. [The Crimson Tide] added a second commitment of a No. 1-ranked prospect to its 2014 recruiting class in defensive end Da'Shawn Hand of Woodbridge (Va.), who is the top overall recruit in the nation according to Rivals.com. ... [Hand] could play the Jack position. ... Or if he continued to grow and put on weight, he could be a defensive end in Alabama's 3-4 scheme. Talent should return at both those positions next fall, as Jeoffrey Pagan will be a senior and A'Shawn Robinson will be just a sophomore after making a splash this year as a true freshman. And even if Jack linebacker Adrian Hubbard opts to declare for the draft, young pass rushers like Denzel Devall, Ryan Anderson and Jonathan Allen will be back to fight for the spot.

No TZ, always can use a hand at Bama.

Go Sparty.

That'll be cold comfort for TSUN fans to read about.

Methinks Saban has plans to redshirt Hand. Does Hand want to redshirt? If he wants to play as a true freshman, there are other programs with a track record of feeding players to the NFL who'll give him that opportunity and possibly bump up his degree credentials (if that's part of his college plan).

If he is as good as hyped... He will play...

If he isnt... processed

November 15, 2013  09:08 AM ET

Point of discussion: As a subgroup of footballers, do O lineman have the highest collective GPAs and the highest rate of earned degrees?

November 15, 2013  09:12 AM ET

Argument for rebuttal? - Redshirting isn't a bad idea for those more challenged by the academic rigors of college. You learn the team, the process, the playbook, and, if you don't dress out for games, you have more time to work on establishing a strong base GPA in core coursework.

A'Shawn Robinson and Jonathan Allen both have played as Freshmen.

Awwwww. Your tears sustain me. You should be happy. Michigan won't have him around to ravage that weak Ohio State team for 3, maybe 4 years.

Now, to the actual article. I'm glad the writers of the article realize we only have 1 linebacker position in the 3-4. **rolls eyes**.

He will most likely play in the Jack LB position and that is where Adrian Hubbard is. Hubbard will probably go pro since he has been rated as a high 2nd possibly late 1st rounder based on his physical abilities.

Jonathan Allen plays DE and Pagan does as well. A'Shawn Plays a DT/DE role sometimes lining up right alongside the NT in a hands down position and sometimes actually playing the NT position, himself.

We rotate a lot of LBs, so it is very likely Hand will get significant PT at linebacker as a freshman if he shows he understands the defense and his responsibilities.

We don't redshirt guys that are more than likely going to turn pro after 3 years. It does not make sense.

I thought Bama's roster was overflowing with talent (20 listed LBs - 2 SRs).

So 'Bama now has players named A'Shawn and Da'Shawn.
What's next? The'Shawn? He'Shawn? We'Shawn?
They already have a guy named Ha Ha.

Great nickname and good safety.

I only count 15 and one of those really plays DE since we lost a DL in the 2 deep to SEI. I count 4 that could possibly go pro, tht leaves 11. to fill 4 spots. Running them in and out means we need at least 8.

2 seniors
CJ Mosley
Tana Patrick

2 that might go pro
Adrian Hubbard - Likely
Trey Depriest -possibly.

1 that I didnt mention that could possibly go pro
Xzavier Dickson.

You can call yourself anything you want, if you play well.

Hand went with the obvious choice. Too bad he doesn't have the fortitude to try to elevate a lesser team. Willing to get lost in the shuffle.
