Art Briles' deal sets Kevin Sumlin up for USC, NFL pay day

10:16 AM ET 11.16 | Now that Art Briles is officially off the market at least until RG4 is on his radar, who's the hottest coaching commodity in Texas? Kevin Sumlin, time to renegotiate again. The Texas A&M coach has been reported as the top choice for USC, a wild card at Texas and a long shot with the Houston Texans. He may also benefit from the NFL's Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate for the positions of head coach or general manager. The NFL has just four minority coaches, and Minnesota's Leslie Frazier may soon be missing from that group. Concerns were raised when all 15 NFL hires after last season -- eight head coaches, seven general managers -- were white. The subsequent rumbling from Tony Dungy, Herm Edwards and others could lead the NFL to twist arms. At the very least, more candidates from outside the NFL could be added to the pool. Stanford's David Shaw and Sumlin would be ideal. Even if the only intention of some is to live up to the rule's requirements, teams will soon be impressed. If Sumlin isn't interested in another job, he's doing a good job of hiding his feelings. He received an extension and raise in February that provides a base of $3.1 million through 2017, which is nice, but still well short of Briles' $4 million-plus through 2023.

Coaching salaries are already too high.
NFL pushing a BS agenda making things worse.
This sucks.

Big game for coach O and his Trojans tonight. Win the PAC-12 and the HC job could be his to keep.
No?

No...O is not a HC and he has already proved that when he dragged Ole Piss down.

What I don't understand is this Rooney Rule.

If a minority coach was good enough to be considered, he would already be on the radar and they would talk to him. All this rule does is say you have to interview a minority. Ok, call in a minority coach, talk to him, tell him thanks and then select the one you want....

Thought we were past that crap!!!

Nope. However, if he beats the tree's or the ruins, then he makes a hell of a case to keep the job. I for one, would love it.

Yes-it would be awful tough for Haden to hire someone else if coach O wins out. Don't see it happening( someone else hired).

Is it just me, or is this article almost racist? The writer intones that the only reason Sumlin will get interviews is that he's black.

That's the Rooney Rule....and I still don't get it.

Sumlin will get interviews because he is damn good at what he does....

When Johnny decides to go Kevin will be right behind him.

This is all moot point. The next Head Football Coach at the University of Southern California will be Ed Orgeron.

I was wondering if Ed O was this good of a coach, why didn't he help Kiffin beat, at least, Washington St. That should've just taken one sentence of advice, and then SC would be in the driver's seat to be the team that gets blown out by Oregon in the p-12 championship game.

Easy answer jackhole. Lane was the offensive play caller. What has been the biggest change since Lane left??? (aside from energy and enthusiasm) PLAY CALLING. Spreading the ball around, running the football and being physical, and most important??? Not one damn bubble screen has been called since Lane got the axe. Good stuff.

In addition to what ICE said you also have one dude in charge-he can always turn down good advice, and apparently LK did that. Further that one dude can either motivate or not motivate, again it would appear that Ed can motivate. USC will be insane once they can recruit 30 a season again.
