$9M burning a hole in Rockies' pockets

07:30 AM ET 11.18 | After the Rockies took a swing and missed on a talented Cuban defector, they're facing at least some backlash from their supporters. The fans see a team that has finished in last place in consecutive seasons and places second regularly for free agents. This isn't always the case. The Rockies won the bidding for outfielder Michael Cuddyer two years ago. ... This much is known: The Rockies have roughly $9 million to spend, if no one is traded (like outfielder Dexter Fowler), to upgrade their roster. There are multiple possibilities given that the team is open to trades, and recognizes areas that need obvious help: First base: Justin Morneau is a free agent target that can't be dismissed. He has an offseason home in Arizona (where the Rockies hold spring training) and a good friendship with Cuddyer.

Don't understand this story; $9 million won't buy much in FA market these days?

Morneau is on the downhill side of a great career. Heckova nice guy, with the Pirates for a short stint this summer, but he just didn't perform. If they could get him cheap, he might be worth it, otherwise . . . .

If you are a Rockies fan the only battle you have to look forward to in 14 is trying to stay out of the basement in your own division.

The rockies should sign Morneau but for 1 million one year deal, why take a big risk?
no need for that!

that,s why the rockies do not need long term deals,
because they lack on quality and quantity players!

There is no guarantee that this club will win the world series in 14 or 15 season!

The Rockies are only about three players away from contending for the World Series.Unfortunately, those three players are Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer and Miguel Cabrera.

well, the only team who could get those two other players are the dodgers if they. wanted!

angels are out of contention, a lack of cash in their bank,
and with those albastros contracts from, weaver/Wilson/pujols/
the organization will need to operate this club in a low speed!

Not only 14, but 15,16,17......

You can't fix a team in last place with multiple position holes with $9M on the FA market. And without minor league talent ready to fill those positions, the only way out of the basement is to trade. Trade established talent for handfuls of prospects; but even that is getting harder with teams stockpiling prospects.

To fill all of the holes the Rockies have The management have to make a decision. Trade starting players or pitchers for handful of prospects which will make more holes to fill, or kick in some extra cash and invest it with free agents which could cost the Rockies more draft picks. what to do? Probably trades for mid level starting players with handful of top prospects. Investing in future makes more sense.
