07:32 AM ET 11.18 | After winning the World Series, Boston may have a bit of luck on its side, too. The Red Sox could benefit, at least temporarily, from an ongoing dispute between Major League Baseball and the Nippon Professional Baseball League in Japan over a revised posting system that could mean highly coveted Rakuten Golden Eagles righthander Masahiro Tanaka will not be pitching stateside in 2014. The Yankees are seen as the most aggressive pursuer of the 25-year-old Tanaka, who went 24-0 this past season. The Yankees are going to get better one way or another and help their pitching staff, but Tanaka is the one potential addition they consider to be an elite pitcher. There have been indications the Yankees could go as high as $70 million for a posting fee.

If the Yankees want Tanaka, the Yankees will get Tanaka.I think they want Tanaka.

Not sure what they have now. This guy can't be worse than Hughes or anyone they have in the minors. Lots of holes to fill.

Problem is, the bids are sealed. They have no idea what other teams are posting.

If they do post a bid of $70M, which is pushing 40% more than the winning bids for Matsuzaka and Darvish, I think it's a fairly safe bet they'll win the rights to Tanaka.

You never know. The Dodgers, Angels, Red Sox, Phillies, and probably a few others could go that high if they think this guy is that good.

To me, the whole posting fee thing is just plain moronic.

We'll see.Over the weekend, I took a look at teams' payrolls as a percentage of their revenue (from Bloomberg). The Dodgers ranked 2nd in revenue, and with revenues that high, I was surprised to find that they ranked 1st in payroll as a percentage of revenue at almost 70%. I'm not sure they've got much more cheese to spread around.Phillies ranked 5th at 54%.Angels ranked 9th at 47%.The Red Sox ranked 21st at 38%.Kind of interesting.I don't think the Dodgers have gotten their new TV contract yet, though. Anyone know about that?

The fact the posting fee does not count against the luxury tax number is a big plus for the high payroll teams.

But I agree with Yogi, this process is ridiculous.

If they are willing to post a fee like that then I never ever want hear them cry about payroll or luxury tax that's for sure. So far, even with the very best players Japan has to offer it's still a huge crapshoot.
