D-Backs interested in Nixon

Trot Nixon impressed the Diamondbacks with his offense in a workout Sunday and they continue with internal talks about offering him a minor league contract, their only option. At the same time, the D-Backs are aware of the fact that Nixon might seek a situation with a more defined role than they can provide.

Wouldn't have minded if the Tribe brought him back, he was a good clubhouse presence. Bet he's asking for a lot of coin in addition to the "defined" role this article mentions.

Thank god. Now we can put to rest all the idiot Red Sox fans calling for the Sox to sign him as a back-up infielder!

Trot Nixon 2007

Below average AVE
Average OBP
Well below average SLG

Average 2008 MLB salary is $2.82M, he made $3M last year.

February 19, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Ha! I'll give him a defined role: Bat Boy.

February 19, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Yes Slinky..but he was worth it all for the Rally Pies!!!!!!!

February 19, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Didn't he have a key hit in the ALCS, Slinky?

If JD Drew's Grand Slam earned him his $14 million, surley Nixon's clutch single earned him $3 million.

February 19, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Another way of saying this is the Nixon's HGH treatments have worked over the off season

You've got me there!

Seriously, I think he does bring some of those "intangables" that some people love.

Call me crazy, though, I'd rather see them sign Lofton than Nixon.

February 19, 2008  10:01 AM ET

I don't know why you guys got rid of Lofton. He WAS your offense in the playoffs.

February 19, 2008  10:02 AM ET

"got rid of" = "didn't re-sign"

February 19, 2008  10:03 AM ET

Plus, he's like the facking mayor of Cleveland. He puts butts in seats and that's not bad for a team, right?

February 19, 2008  10:04 AM ET

A lot of Indians fans still don't identify with the current team, and cling to the "glory days" of the late 90's. I think Lofton could help make that transition, too.

February 19, 2008  11:05 AM ET

Yes, I would like them to resign Lofton again, for the right price.

February 19, 2008  11:26 AM ET

For the right price, no doubt.

Check this out:

Lofton 2007: .296AVE - .367OBP - .414SLG - .781OPS
23SB - 7CS - 77%

Hunter 2007: .287AVE - .334OBP - .505SLG - .839OPS
18SB - 9CS - 67%

Hunter's going to make $18.5M (including signing bonus) in '08, so even the $6M Lofton got last year looks like a bargain. Plus Lofton played for less than $4M in '06, '05 and '04.

To me, it makes so much sense on so many levels that I don't understand why it hasn't happened yet. Then I realize that the fact that it makes so much sense to me and hasn't happened yet proves that I'm an idiot.

February 19, 2008  11:35 AM ET

I think Lofton will end up in Cincy as the bridge to Jay Bruce.

February 19, 2008  11:36 AM ET

Damn that fancy Keith Richards math!

So what kinda books do you think Keith's got in his library? You know, since he'a always falling off the ladder in there?

February 19, 2008  11:52 AM ET

Sure gonna miss the pies from him

I thought Ron Wood made pies?
