07:25 AM ET 11.20 | Tuesday brought with it a pair of sparks from the hot stove season in Boston. According to a major league source, the Sox have had "serious dialogue" with Carlos Beltran, who could fill a need in the outfield in case Jacoby Ellsbury signs elsewhere and in the middle of the order if Mike Napoli should leave. The eight-time All-Star has batted .288 and averaged 26 homers, 88 RBI and an .860 OPS over the past three seasons. ... In an interview on Sirius XM's MLB Network Readio, first baseman/outfielder Corey Hart said the Red Sox are among several teams that have contacted him. The 31-year-old former All-Star missed this past season while recovering from surgeries on both knees after averaging 24 homers per season from 2007-12 with the Brewers.

I assume that every team is talking to any free agent that would be able to fill their needs.

Corey Hart could be of interest as insurance if Napoli leaves, plus as another outfield option. Much depends on his post-op recovery.

Beltran is missing one thing, a ring, and the best chance for him to get it at his age is Boston.

I'd think he'd have as good if not a better chance if he remained with the Cards.

I agree. The AL East is a very difficult division to repeat in.

That is a rather suspicious looking season, isn't it? Very Brady Anderson-ish.

I'm hoping it's not the case, but the thought certainly does cross one's mind these days.

He had a poor basestealing record by his standards in '11, maybe he bulked up too much?

I wonder if Tacoby Bellsbury set a record for being thrown out the fewest times (4) with over 50 steals (he had 52)...that's some damn fine running there.

Eric Davis had a season with 50 steals and 6 CS.
Ichiro was 45/2 one year, wow!
Tim Raines had 50/5 once.
Vince Coleman went 50/8 and 65/10.
I haven't found anybody with 50 or more steals who was better than Ells last season.

There's a thought. I hadn't noticed that. Yes, he's one heck of a base stealer. Reads pitchers well and has great acceleration.

Vince Coleman was 107-14 one year.
