Tigers sending $30M to Texas, too

07:25 AM ET 11.21 | Dave Dombrowski threaded a needle that isn't easy for a GM. A good baseball trade -- an old-school swap of major league talent that materializes seemingly out of nowhere, also known as a challenge trade -- takes a certain amount of artistry and the sort of conviction very few in baseball possess. Take, for example, the Prince Fielder-for-Ian Kinsler blockbuster that went down Wednesday night. ... [Dombrowski] and Jon Daniels, his counterpart with the Texas Rangers, didn't spend an excessive amount of time haggling over extra pieces or parts or details. They saw their clubs' strengths and weaknesses, surveyed the free agent and trade markets, realized they were a good fit, agreed upon $30 million heading south, got Fielder to waive his no-trade clause and pulled off a deal of two All-Star regulars.

In theory - this seems to be a good trade for both teams.

Myopically - I love it from this side of the barn. A power-hitting first baseman/DH and a permanent spot in the lineup for Profar... great fit here.

Being able to get Profar in on an every day basis in one position he can finally show his talents, unlike last year where he moved around more than a chess piece. I like the trade because it improves the Rangers at 2 positions.

....."pop up" main contribution of late was to go retrieve hambone out of bars before it went any further....with hambone gone , he became expendable.....fielder is the best pulling guard baseball player on the planet......he badly wanted to play for wash instead of leyland before he signed, so his post season lay downs finallly worked...profar will dominate baseball for years to come...

Never met a chicken fried steak he didn't like. I predict a shortage throughout Texas very soon.

Seems like after all the injuries miggy got, they realized he can't play 3rd indefinitely

Throw in the fact that Prince looked like a 40 year old fat man in the ALCS, Tigers saw the future and didn't like what they saw.

He will never be confused with Big Papi, that's for sure!

And who wouldn't want Kinsler on their team?

Prince is a vegetarian.

The fattest one you'll ever see.

I thought he said he was a vegan?

Maybe some of that Texas heat will trim him down a bit.

November 21, 2013  08:38 AM ET

Maybe Prince will drop a few lbs during those 100 degree spells in the summer.

Could be. I just know he doesn't eat meat.

He eats something. And a lot of it.

Blasphemy.

Agree. They did well to get some value in return. Apparently both sides got what they wanted.

Prince did that for a while and gave it up.

I think the Tigers made out here, got out from under a huge bad contract to a guy who appears to be in early weight-induced decline and opened a spot at 1B for Miggy, who needs to put less stress on his also oversized body. I think the Rangers now have their own Pujols.

If you just eat the fat off the meat are you still a vegan?
