The New Jersey Nets have completed the trade of All-Star point guard Jason Kidd to the Dallas Mavericks. The trade sends Kidd, forward Malik Allen and guard Antoine Wright to Dallas for point guard Devin Harris, center DeSagana Diop and swingman Maurice Ager, plus retired forward Keith Van Horn and Trenton Hassell. New Jersey also gets two first-round draft picks and $3 million.

The Mavericks did not get what they needed the most. That is the low post scorer down low like Shaq or maybe Jermaine O'neal. It makes the Mavs weaker in the playoffs because they will not have any big man to counter the likes of Duncan, Shaq, Pau, and Yao. The Mavericks lost the players that helped them beat teams like the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Jazz, Rockets, & Nuggets.. They went from a defensive team to an offensive team. More jump shooting and run and gun. No more penetrators. Harris plays defense in 2 ways. Offensively by attacking the basket and getting the other big man in foul trouble and the other is his quickness on defense. They lost Diop for shot blocking and offensive and defensive rebounding. The Mavericks don't have anymore offensive rebounders except for George.

The Mavs are betting that they wont meet the Spurs in the playoffs. The Mavs will not have Devin Harris to guard Tony Parker and they will desperately need a big man like DeSagana Diop to guard Tim Duncan.

Q: What's the difference between the Kidd and Shaq trades and a baloney sandwich?

A: Nobody ever mortgaged their franchise's future and destroyed any possibility of their current squad winning a ring for a baloney sandwich.

o neal is definitely not the answer. that guys is hurt more than anyone in the league. plus he shows no heart. the trainers said he could play in like 2 or 3 weeks and then he comes out and says he might miss the season. i bet if they were doing better he wouldnt be sitting out.

as far as harris defense. thats a bit iffy. he got abused by baron and ellis last year bc he isnt big enough to body them or keep up with them. the same with nash and barbosa.

losing diop does pose some problems but with gasol and duncan you can put bass and dirk on them. i dont think anyone including shaq can match up with yao now that he has matured as a player. and shaq i dont know how great you really have to be to cover him anymore. he was getting beat and fouling out constantly before the trade.

no one cares anymore

I wouldn't have traded Devin Harris for Kidd straight up...let alone their only big man who can hold down the post and future draft picks. I can't get my head around this one. The Mavs lost last year because of a lack of a low post presence. They have done nothing to address their real problem.

GO LAKERS , YES GO

February 19, 2008  01:53 PM ET

Wow, Dallas just blew it. I can understand this trade right up until the first round picks. NJ seriously ripped off the Mavericks, getting a speedy young point, another 6 fouls in the post, and the ability to build through the draft more quickly.

February 19, 2008  02:07 PM ET

The Mavericks panicked because they were losing before the all-star break. They were losing because they did not have Devin Harris. They were beating the top teams in the west when Devin was playing. Pure panic...

Did anyone think Dallas was going to do anything in the playoffs by standing pat? Dirk is a nice player, but he has no mental toughness - Kidd has boat loads of the stuff. From Day 1, he is their leader on the floor.

February 19, 2008  02:24 PM ET

This is for The Edge. It's called "TEAM" not mental edge. Kidd went to the championship twice and did he have the mental edge?

February 19, 2008  02:54 PM ET

The Mavs got screwed. Kidd is great point guard don't get me wrong . But he is old and has maybe two years left in him. They gave up two 1st rd picks plus all the other players for maybe two years with Kidd. Harris has the potential to be a great point guard as well and for much less money. Not to mention that traded away most of their bench. I hope the Mavs come out smelling like roses but I have a feeling that the roses are being sent to the Nets address.

Guam, Devin Harris is a pretty good player. But I think you underestimate Kidd. J-Kidd is one of the best PG's to ever play the game. And in last year's playoffs, he averaged a triple double against Cleveland. Before this trade, the Dallas "team" as I saw it, probably would lose to Golden State again if they had to face off in the first round this year.

Its time to turn this career around 360 degrees.

February 19, 2008  03:03 PM ET

The way I see it, Dallas is trading their 4th best player (behind Dirk, Josh, Terry) for a guy who will be their new 2nd best player (only behind Dirk) and their unquestioned floor general. The draft picks will be around #25 - not big losses. In terms of bench, they still have Stackhouse, George, and newly acquired Malik Allen (he's decent).

February 19, 2008  03:11 PM ET

Time to turn that career around 360 degrees.

You got to be kidding. 2 first round picks included, what happens if Keith Van Horn finally turns out to be Larry Bird. Plus, Devon Harris is not a joke, he is very good and will re-engergize Carter and Jefferson. This is a great deal for the Nets. Actually, after 3 years, it will be a deal that the Mavericks wish they never made.

February 19, 2008  03:18 PM ET

Just wanna let you GM's know that if you need to make any more shady deals, I am available for four million to go run around your gym a couple of times and then retire. Good lord does the word "ethics" still appear in the dictionary.

February 19, 2008  03:24 PM ET

You got to be kidding. In 3 years, the Nets will be laughing so hard at this deal. 2 first rounders and Devon Harris. Harris alone will re-energize both Jefferson and Carter with his shooting and driving ability. Along with the other players, this is a steal for NJ in the long run. Lets not forget, the Nets still are in the playoff hunt. If the Nets go further in the playoffs than the Mavericks, the NBA will have a heartattack.

The Edge. Dallas has swept the Warriors already this year but that is not the problem. The problems are the Duncans, the Shaqs, Yaos, etc and all the big men in the west. Dallas will probably not meet the Warriors in the playoffs. J-Kidd is a triple double guy but is he winning. He's got 2 all stars in the Nets w/ Carter and Jefferson and yet they are not going anywhere. If the Nets acquired a low post player then maybe they would have been a strong playoff team. You don't know the Nets might make it to the playoffs this year becaus of this deal. The last 2 championships were won by points in the paint. Either by low post or by attacking the basket (Parker, Ginibili, Duncan, Wade, Shaq).
