09:24 AM ET 11.24 | The Cardinals filled one need by trading for Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos on Friday, and now they might be close to filling another. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick tweeted on Saturday night that St. Louis and free agent Jhonny Peralta are "closing in on a deal," although the terms were not specified. Peralta is expected to play shortstop for the Cardinals, Crasnick added. FoxSports.com's Jon Morosi tweeted later Saturday that Peralta is expected to get a four-year contract. The Cardinals have yet to make a formal announcement about a signing. The defending National League champions have made little secret of their desire for an offensive upgrade at the position. Their shortstops, led by Pete Kozma, posted a batting line of .222/.280/.303 in 2013, with four home runs and 54 RBIs.

I hadn't expected the Cardinals to go after this guy.

UGH! 4 years for a 31 y/o maybe ex-steroids user? Not happy about this at all

Not the move I wanted.

I agree, seems very out of character for them.

The Cards to me are pushing a MAJOR panic button here with the signing of 50 game suspension Peralta. They have forgotten the past with light hitting ss Dal Maxvill in the sixties winning two WS with him.

Neither did anyone else in Cardinal Nation.

I said this on another thread, but it is very out of character for Mozeliak to give a four year FA deal to a near 32 year old. He must be really tired of getting zero offense out of the shortstop position.

If this rumor is true you could have major problems in the Cardinal club house next season with a pill popping player making more money a year than your most like player on the team in Molina.

I agree with your point, but Yadi makes $15M next year, so I don't think they will pay Peralta more than that, if the 4 year $52M is true.

I think the way any of the guys suspended for PEDS fit into a new clubhouse will definitely be an issue, though.

Now wait a minute. No team is pure. Albert Pujols not so respectfully declined a polygraph that Jack Clark agreed to do. Peralta got caught, and that is all we know.

He was suspended for the diet pill containing a banned ingredient. Was not steroids. I am quite sure Mo did his homework on this guy. Lets take a wait and see attitude here. By the way, when his name was listed, he owned up to it......better than most.

PED issue aside; I think they overpaid by quite a bit. Detroit wouldn't even make a qualifying offer. Now the Cardinals are paying close to that for four years. His defense isn't that great to start with; I don't see it getting better now that he's on the wrong side of 30. Four years from no he'll have little to no range left. The Cardinals had better have a good third and second baseman to bookend this guy.

While I agree with you that they overpaid, I think the issue comes down to this: It sounds like every potential trade partner for a shortstop wanted at least two of the young arms plus a position player such as Matt Adams. Mozeliak wasn't willing to go there. One young arm yes, but not two.

When the depth of availability in a given year is weak for a position, as shortstop is this year, you tend to end up over-paying. That is what happened to the Cardinals here.

There is much upside to what Mozeliak has gotten done this week, though. He has addressed two major issues in upgrading his centerfield defense, and his offense at shortstop. He improved the Cardinals in both areas without giving up a single young pitcher, and I applaud him for that.

I do agree that trade demands were way out of line. I was prepared to see them move forward with Kozma rather that pay what was being asked for a shortstop.
