Must-win for Mike Shanahan's career?

11:17 AM ET 11.24 | This past week, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan wore sweats and cracked jokes with the Washington media. He looked relaxed, even as questions percolated about an unraveling locker room, a much discussed rift between coaches and quarterback Robert Griffin III and whether Shanahan will return for a fifth season as Redskins coach. "You don't think about a run," Shanahan said a day after his team fell to 3-7, far from the record the defending NFC East champions expected after 10 games. "You think about winning a football game." Indeed, one of the most important games of Shanahan's tenure in Washington will happen Monday night at FedEx Field. Almost as much as the final five contests -- which will definitively reveal growth or regression and whether team chemistry is crumbling -- the national conversation will tip one way or the other Monday. A win against the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers would quiet the turmoil, showing that the 61-year-old coach can succeed under fire. Another nationally televised loss, though, would amplify speculation about a last-place team falling apart, Shanahan's relationship with Griffin and whether a different coach is better equipped to lead the Redskins to the Super Bowl.

Hail to the Redskins!!

I was a fan of RG3-7 when he was in college. Watched him every chance I had. But It seems to me that he is allowing his "Savior of Washington DC" title to go to his head. His comments after the last loss show someone pointing fingers, instead of a leader owning up to an absolutely horrible throw at the end of a game. When you are the QB, you use the word I not we.

RGIII doesn't want to see his "bad plays" in the film room.

Chico was right. This kid is too full of himself.

As a cowboys fan I was honestly really worried when the Redskins got RGIII, I live 30 min from DC so I am overwhelmed by Redskins news and fans. What I'm seeing is just odd. Whatever is between RGIII and the Shanahans needs to get resolved.....because I don't see RGIII leaving-it will be the coach that goes, and it is rare to see a team with immediate success after a major coaching change.

I'm starting to get the feeling a coaching change won't change much about RGIII. A coaching change might only magnify the existing problems.

HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!

a different coach is better equipped to lead the <insert team name here> to the Super Bowl. Without an Elway, wherever Shanny is, put the team name in the designated spot.

LOL.

Jim Haslett will be the fall guy in Washington, not Shanahan.

Any head coach that can last something like the last 13 years with only one playoff win on his resume is most likely not in the you better win the next game or you are out of here category.

I would probably change Elway to Terrell Davis, but otherwise agreed.

Agreed, but RGIII's power base ultimately is his good performance on the field. That is eroding quickly along with the goodwill he had from his team mates and fans.

The Broncos sure could have used him in Superbowl XXIV. They probably would have only lost 55-17 instead of 55-10....

Probably so, DJ.

And I wouldn't be so surprised if this wasn't where Gregg Williams tried to resurrect his career.

Haslett has been consistently defended by Shanny.

Year 1 it was obvious Haslett destroyed the D. It's now year 4.

He was Joe's heir apparent. Well liked by the team and gracious with the local media.

Too bad Shanny isn't likely to include his son as a part of that deal.
