Islanders' goaltending situation critical

07:35 AM ET 11.25 | While Rick DiPietro tries to rebuild his hockey career in relative obscurity outside Charlotte, N.C., where the former No. 1 overall pick and United States Olympian signed a 25-game contract with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League, his former NHL team has its own crease troubles. New York Islanders general manager Garth Snow has not addressed his team's Achilles heel: Goaltending (82 goals allowed in 24 games) since last spring. They aren't going anywhere with Evgeni Nabokov, who is now hurt and who was not good in the playoffs last May, or with kids Kevin Poulin and Anders Nilsson. Maybe he was looking at Jonas Hiller before Viktor Fasth went down with the Anaheim Ducks, but that door is closed now.

Where for art thou, Rickety?

The Islanders and the Flyers seem to both be cursed by bad goaltending over the last few years. Big contracts for mediocre goalies, injuries, and just plain bad play. Makes you wonder who they have evaluating goaltending talent. Whoever it is, they should be fired.

Big contracts for mediocre goalies,

Amen.

I pity whoever signs King Henrik this offseason.

QUOTE(#1):

They have nothing left of value, besides a first round pick that'll probably end up being pretty decent, to give up without completely defeating the purpose. Anyone with half a brain could see this team wasn't going to improve with the current goaltending.

I'd rather see them try platooning with a bunch of prospects as opposed to watching Nabokov in nets. He is a beached whale.

I think big long contracts for any position ar e a bad thing, but it does seem to show more in the goalie position

to me at least it seems, Snow panicked and tried to address the issue by over paying for a mediocre goalie.

Homer on the other hand, magically makes it to the Cup, sends his best two forwards and a goalie prospect (now a Vezina winner) packing and signs a lunatic to a hyper inflated contract.

If it gets me picks, and good picks, I am all for it.

He is aging, still at the top of his game, and do it now while you can get something very valuable in return. If you wait, Sather is guaranteed to start a fire sale this summer and I can see him walking for close to nothing.

Do they still give that job to the worse skater on the team I wonder.

Are you really that old?

QUOTE(#6):

Everyone knew that last playoffs besides the Islanders and Islander fans.

Most Isles fans know that Nabby is/was the problem. The main problem is the idiot GM did nothing to fix the glaring holes in the off season. DEF and G plague this team right now. So what does our GM do? Trades a fan favorite and a few picks for a RENTAL on OFFENSE.

I'm not done with the 2013-14 Isles just yet, but until changes happen on the back end of the ice it looks grim. I'm not holding my breath for anything to happen.

Snow's seeming job security is almost as unfathomable as sather's

QUOTE(#18):

Luckily they play in the worst division in hockey. It's not too hard to get back in the race.

When you're 30th on the PK....running 50% of the past 6 plus games and your PP can't answer going 0-1104318306 the past games, you have no chance.

Surprisingly, the Isles have been pretty good 5 on 5.

Like I said, until they make changes on the back end of the ice (G or DEF), the results will likely continue to be the same.

"Garth Snow has not addressed his team's Achilles heel: Goaltending (82 goals allowed in 24 games) since last spring."

That's because even he realizes that their soft underbelly is their defense.
