Rift between Coach K, Williams

North Carolina men's basketball coach Roy Williams took offense to a comment Mike Krzyzewski made about publicizing injuries, and fired back at the Duke coach on Monday and Tuesday. According to Raleigh station WRBZ-AM's Web site, Krzyzewski was talking about Duke freshman Nolan Smith on the Duke radio network after Sunday night's loss at Wake Forest. "Nolan hyperextended his knee at Maryland and has been dealing with that since -- and unlike other schools, we don't release our injuries -- so I thought he played a strong game tonight," Krzyzewski said, according to the Web site. Williams interpreted the "other schools" statement as an insult aimed at North Carolina, which Williams has said is battling more injuries than any team he has coached. "Regardless of what anybody else says about they have injuries, too, which is a bunch of bunk, so I don't give a crap what somebody else says, but coach their own damn team," Williams said in an audio clip posted on WRBZ's Web site. "I'll coach mine, in case somebody has heard statements about that."

I'm a Tar Heels Fan but it seems Coach Williams may have overreacted to what on the surface seems like a harmless statement by Coach K. However, given the less than cordial history and stormy relationship between the two, one can understand where the catalyst for the response came from! I can't wait till the next meeting of these two teams!

This is a non-story to me. Roy Williams is overreacting. Get over it Roy

I'm with my man roy, that's the problem too many people turn the other way from Duke cheap shots it's good to see Roy goin after them flunkies.

Read the article, it may give you a better perspective on the relationship and why Williams reacted as he did.

What Duke cheap shot? Did Coach K mention any team or conference? Tell Roy to get out of his feelings and just coach. But honestly, if i do see Ty Lawson is going to miss another game as a headline, I'm going to be sick. If the kid is going to be out 2-3 weeks, then say that. Stop saying "he's looking better" everyday.

I have to agree! Coach K has always fostered an air of arrogance that transcends to his players. There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance, and the "holier than thou" mentality and attitude alienates many when it comes to Duke basketball. You either love em' or you hate em'!

February 20, 2008  07:18 AM ET

I know Coach K and Roy aren't best buddies. But in this case, Williams is just blowing this thing up for no reason. He's trying to make a story where there was none. Coach K said one-line about injuries. And then Roy Williams wants to make a debate about it? Coach K made his comment on Sunday. The Roy talks about it on Monday...then Tuesday...what time is his press conference today about it? I'm sure he'll mention it again.

February 20, 2008  07:20 AM ET

Speaking of blowing things up for no reason...

I'd like to blow that picture of Roy up. It has to be in the top 10 of T&R worst pics of all time.

jj730 to a degree, but you have to appreciate what this does for college basketball at a time when rivalries are becoming a thing of the past! Any sport needs rivalries! Given the storied history of these two teams this will take their rivalry to a whole new level! I love it as a fan!

February 20, 2008  07:28 AM ET

That's "I will agree to a degree" sorry too early!

I think the element in this that is being overlooked is that this quote was taken right after a Dook loss. This was Coach K looking to lash out at something because he was pi$$ed off. So he took a shot at Carolina. I think the context, more than what was actually said, warrants a reaction.

By stating that they don't publicize thier injuries in that situation, isn't he guilty of making the excuse that he's criticizing Carolina for?

February 20, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Coach K has been talking trash ever since he was no longer the best coach in the ACC. Once Dean left COach K was in the limelight and the main head coach in the ACC. Now that Roy is at Carolina and is having more success in the tourney Coach K is gettin jealous and saying dumb arrogant things.

Roy may have over reacted a little but i say give these stuck up Dookies what for whenever they mess up at all.

February 20, 2008  10:21 AM ET

Tar Heel fans...shouldn't Roy Williams be somewhere crying at a press conference? And can someone translate what "a bunch of bunk" means?

February 20, 2008  10:46 AM ET

haha i dont understand how duke players are suddenly stuck up. the only player you might have had a good case for was mcroberts cuz he was kind of a ****. i think any coach in the acc will tell you that coach k is a class act. roy williams has always been a drama queen and this just adds to that.

It sure makes that ACC finale an even better match-up than it already was. Can't wait. Psycho T and the Tar Heels will be amped. D. Nelson and the Blue Devils will certainly match their intensity.

dukebludvls | 02/20/08, 10:46 AM

You seem to have forgotten the most arrogant and probably most hated college hoops player of his day - Christian Laettner.

February 20, 2008  12:54 PM ET

i hope my carolina boys see duke in the tournement then we will see what happens.

February 20, 2008  01:16 PM ET

I'm no Duke fan, but Williams is acting like he often does - a petulant, over-reacting whiner.
