No Hendricks help for Junior

By the time Dale Earnhardt Jr. got into position to try and pull out a win in Sunday's Daytona 500, he found himself all alone. One by one, Earnhardt Jr.'s new Hendrick Motorsports teammates were forced to leave the track and head to the garage. Jeff Gordon suffered a suspension failure. Jimmie Johnson got caught up in an accident on Lap 177 of 200. Casey Mears was running in the top five late in the race when he cut a tire and slammed into the wall. Earnhardt Jr., stayed out twice while other lead-lap cars pitted late in the race, but still managed to finish ninth. That would be Hendrick's best finish on this wild day at Daytona International Speedway.

This was an awesome race and Jr looked pretty good

Truth!

What kind of truth and rumors story is this? The fluff kind to put a JR picture on the front perhaps?

I like JR too, but come on fannation.

February 20, 2008  07:32 AM ET

This is actually a story. The fact that only 1 of four major players on a team finished the biggest race of the year, arguably...

I truly thought Tony and Jr would get together and finished 1/2, with either one winning, depending on just whoever was in front as they pushed by everyone.

February 20, 2008  07:44 AM ET

I don't expect to see the two of them work together anymore. Jr will have help readily available, and the Gibbs motors have looked strong so Tony will likely ride with Denny and KB. If Tony and Jr were the only ones at the front with a bunch of Dodges and Ford's, then they might work together.

I guess I just didn't think of it as a story, when it is 3 days after the race, and every media outlet has covered this "angle". It probably would have been a better story if they were talking about the upcoming Cali race, this weekend; and whether or not Hendrick will have a stronger showing. Rather than, recapping HMS's day at Daytona.

I'm looking forward to Vegas and the Hendrick's team hooking up and handling the rest of the field!! At least this is what I'm hoping for!

To the Charlotte Observers credit, the paper literally has a Nascar section every day of the week. I would guess that this is the best newspaper coverage anywhere in the country. Always a sports page cover photo of the winner from every weekend. If I lived elsewhere I would probably get this paper mailed to me. Funny story - the local non race fans complain about too much Nascar coverage, (I say shut up).

awwwwww it is so sad that hms couldn't get it together... fell short of everyones expectations huh? could it be that expectations were set way too high??? it is called racing..... you can lead 499laps but the one you need to win is the last one.....

For Tony Stewart to assist anyone to a win in a race he wanted too much is unthinkable. His ego will not allow him to assist a Dale Earnhardt Jr. to capture the glory that would have truly befell him. Tony wants it. Tony isn't going to help anyone else get it. Not even a teammate. Notice him and Busch didn't work together hardly at all?

JGR is the new sheriff in town. Get used to it.

February 20, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Funny how T Stew pushed Casey Mears to his Coca Cola 600 win last year. Hoo doesnt know Hah about what he is talking about.

February 20, 2008  08:44 AM ET

Hard to feel sorry for HMS after world domination last year.....although I really hope this is not a sign the Toyota is about to take over. Agree with Cassidy - appeared that there is a new sheriff in town.

February 20, 2008  09:12 AM ET

I don't think HMS has to much to worry about ,wreaks happen, parts do break,,
but nothing happened to Jr,,9th was not to bad for a starter ,Dodge got
lucky,with Newman he drove a great race,but I don't think Dodge willshow
to much this year,Ford Idon't know,,Toyota And Chevy are the best bets

Hey Sly, I like your black #3.. I have to get pictures saved on my computer at home so I can change my proflie picture. Hope I can remember how to do it!!! I am really afraid that Toyota is going to be strong this year, I hate it but I think we are going to have to accept it. They got a solid team with great drivers when they went after Gibb's racing and I think they will have some wins this year!

February 20, 2008  09:45 AM ET

Oh yeah Toyota looks damn good, they were strong as he// Sunday
we'll see what happens - it's only the first race.

February 20, 2008  09:46 AM ET

I doubt if Hendrick is too worried after Sunday. Disappointed maybe, but they will still win at least a dozen races this year.

February 20, 2008  09:51 AM ET

Doesn't it hurt you tho Sly watching a foreign car do so well so quickly this year.. They about dominate the truck series and now with their added horse power they were real strong on Sunday!!!
Hey , do you know what happened to Mikey.. Did he have problems or just lost the draft and couldn't get back up front!!???

February 20, 2008  10:02 AM ET

No it doesn't hurt thats what built this great country,,
competition is good for any sport ,,I think they got off
to a bad start last year,,they did look good Sunday
Mikey was looking for help I think,, I just don't know
