A's would break the bank for Cruz

07:18 AM ET 11.27 | Two weeks from winter meetings, the A's might be warming to a deal. There were rumblings on Tuesday that Oakland is currently working on several fronts, potentially looking at trade possibilities while still eyeing the free agent market. One major-league source told me that the A's have "meaningful interest" in free agent outfielder Nelson Cruz, although there is nothing imminent. According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, Cruz is looking for four years and $75 million, which seems well out of Oakland's price range; the largest contract in A's history is Eric Chavez's six-year, $66 million deal. ... As for deals, Opening Day starter Brett Anderson is the most obvious potential trade piece, with several teams, most notably Toronto, expressing interest. The A's position player most coveted by other clubs is [Yoenis Cespedes].

4 years? If he plays a combined 2 years out of the four it will be a big story. He constantly breaks down and he sucks as a fielder anyway.

I'm of an opinion that most are still using PED's even with testing. Chemistry is making strides every hour or every day. This last group never failed a test other than Braun. To think they are the only ones would be very na??ve. The reward is too great as long as they are getting away with it. It's also na??ve to think MLB, the union, or the owners care one bit about it. The public and Congress cares about PED's in baseball. The same two groups completely ignore PED usage in every other professional and top level college sport.

The caption should read The A's will not be breaking the bank for Cruz.

How much money will it take to teach Cruz the "no doubles" defense?

keep rewarding PEDs guys with monster contracts......that'll show em that it doesn't pay to cheat.....wait...what ?

It's a "just don't get caught" league.

If I am the A's I would take Bautista from the Jays instead of Cruz.

It will be interesting to see what kind of years Peralta and Cruz have. I think back to Sosa and Palmero had after they were off of the steroids. Their careers bottomed out and were out of Baseball a year later. But I do agree any one caught taking steroids should be out for 162 games. Second time a life time ban. If penalties are more severe the risks would be much greater than the rewards.

Just don't see the A's outbidding the Rangers for Cruz. And also don't see him getting anywhere near 4/75.

80 millions/5 years would be fairly enough, lets not forget this guy its another peds abuser,,,

if i'm the A's i would trade two top prospect pitchers to the halos for trumbo and kendrick, angels could attach eannetta as a extra player in this trade,,,,

QUOTE(#4):

Surely this is incorrect. Billy Beane has the hots for Cruz?

i think Cruz agent its making all this up,, surelly he has higher expectations with this type of profile
there would be a team or two who likely fall for the rumble,,,

November 27, 2013  11:27 AM ET

are you kidding me?? i could expect the rangers or red sox but the A's?? doubtfull

A reasonable statement given the facts. Cruz never failed a drug test.

November 27, 2013  01:35 PM ET

Even if they never failed a test, they didn't pass one either. If they didn't take banned substances I can't believe those players would just quietly take their suspension

If the A's want him that's saying something
