D-Backs take stand against PED users

07:27 AM ET 11.29 | Of course, on the surface, a player such as Nelson Cruz represents the kind of power bat the Diamondbacks would appreciate in their lineup. He might not be a perfect fit -- he's not a left-handed hitter -- but he could conceivably fill the void the team believes it had. Only he won't be coming here. Cruz, a free agent, probably will cost more than the Diamondbacks can afford, but there's a much simpler reason why it'll never happen. Cruz has a performance-enhancing drug history, and the Diamondbacks tend to avoid those kinds of players, or at least the high-profile ones. ... As far as the Diamondbacks are concerned, their hardline stance appears to be spearheaded by Ken Kendrick, the club's managing general partner and a longtime critic of PED users.

Does this mean the Diamondbacks are giving back the 2001 trophy since Luis Gonzalez got the game winning hit or Matt Williams hit in the middle of that order? Spare me the self righteous nonsense.

"the Diamondbacks tend to avoid those kinds of players".

That third word is the key to the sentence.

Actually like the rhetoric to some extent..... right now the penalties hurt the clubs more than the player. The rosters get slammed also. So not wanting them now (though they may have been guilty in their own way) is more a sign of the increase penalties..... why disrupt your clubhouse?

Luis Gonzalez.

Exactly. It is all BS. Read the whole article and there are many instances where it did not matter one bit. Recently too. They do not want to pony up the money Cruz is asking for. Total BS and cover for not spending on Cruz......

Arizona had a total payroll of $89 million last year with Miguel Montero their highest paid player at $10 million. Cruz is asking for $18 million a year for 4 years a total of $75 million.

That is why they will not add him. Period....

Hmmm.....wonder what Kirk thinks about this?

It will be interesting what kind of year Cruz, Peralta, Braun, and the rest who served suspensions, knowing that they should be off of PEDS. I think of Sosa and Palmero after all but committing perjury before congress both denying using PEDS. The following year their careers bottom out and both were out of baseball the following year.

No PED users!! Will they be testing all their current players??
