Steroid abuse in NASCAR?

While steroids and HGH might not be a factor for race car drivers, it doesn't mean NASCAR has nothing to worry about on the drug front. "Steroids or the like are not going to impact the driver per se," said epidemiologist Dr. Charles E. Yesalis, an independent doping expert. "A lot of these guys lift weights and are in better shape than drivers of years of old, but you would worry about mood-altering drugs like amphetamines or cocaine that could affect the safety." Where steroids could come into play, Yesalis said, is with pit crews, whose strength and agility are often the difference between victory and defeat. And the crew members are definitely athletes - Newman's crew includes Bryan White, a former University of Virginia linebacker who was part of the Jets' rookie minicamp in 2006, and former Davidson College shortstop Ben Brown. "Everyone's an athlete, and has to be," Newman said of his pit crew. "The gas man, he's got 80 pounds of fuel (on his shoulder) and is trying to hit a three-inch hole without spilling the first drop. That's athleticism." For those athletes, and for the drivers, NASCAR tests for drugs based only on "reasonable suspicion," according to a spokesman. More standardized testing is in the jurisdiction of the individual teams, a policy that doesn't fly with the experts.

Wow...NASCAR on steroids.....gee whiz.

I guess that is why they call them Drugs ? Perhaps people just like taking drugs because of what they do to them.

Why don't these large sports organizations start testing all of the time and put and end to - drugs?

Answer: They are cheap.

February 20, 2008  09:37 AM ET

Wouldn't you need to have Carl Edwards as the picture to go with this story, and not Tony Stewart?

February 20, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Your right nin_man--Carl is one muscled up man!!! It he nice to look at with a T-shirt on!! Tony's attitude is the only thing that might make people think he is on steroids...LOL But don't get me wrong I love Tony's attitude, racing needs bad boys like him!

February 20, 2008  09:50 AM ET

Just put the 'roids in the gas tank. Then you'll have a 'muscle car'.

Okay, it's bad, but it's still early.

February 20, 2008  09:53 AM ET

Mr. Natural-LOL

February 20, 2008  10:17 AM ET

Don't even know why this is up here.

February 20, 2008  10:48 AM ET

Must be Nascar's turn.....they have gone through most of the professional sports .....so lets pick on Nascar for a while. Such nonesense. This Dr. Yesalis that is quoted in this article might not be a doping expert as noted but possibly a dope. IMHO Edwards, Gordon, Kyle and a few others need roids. LOL

This just in, The U.S. Association of Chess Players will be implementing a drug test policy under new allegations of HGH and Steroid abuse by some of the players. U.S. Champ, Ivan Plycheckinokov, who was accused of using HGH said, "They must have misremembered the events. But I promise I never used any steroid of any kind."

WOW that explains why Jeff was able to give Kenseth that shove a year ago. And this sure explains how that Buff looking Kasey Kane was able to throw done that 90 year old security guard with such ease.
