Rex Ryan's Jets future still uncertain

11:19 AM ET 12.01 | Ryan's future with the Jets beyond this season remains up in the air despite transforming a team not expected to be a part of the playoff conversation with five weeks left in the regular season. Although Ryan often exaggerates the point by citing one ESPN Week 1 power ranking (comprised, by the way, of a grand total of six voters), there's no debating that the 5-6 Jets have overachieved entering Sunday's critical game against the 5-6 Dolphins. Ryan absolutely deserves to be back next season to continue the rebuilding phase, but much of the focus this month will center on what it will take for him to salvage his job. The Jets remain in the playoff hunt, but a postseason berth shouldn't be a prerequisite for Ryan to stick around. Let's be real: He deserves Coach of the Year consideration if a team with a rookie quarterback, subpar offensive skill-position players and seven new defensive starters (not to mention a coaching staff that underwent a massive overhaul) wins eight games.

Ah... but what does the New York Post have to say?

I just read the "Coach of the Year" remark... seriously?

He's done a decent job this year!

They're doing better than most people expected, if that's what you mean by "decent". He's beaten some competitive teams, and then lost games to teams that won't get near the playoffs. John Idzik has a pretty good idea of what life with Rex will be like if he decides to keep him around.

Bambi's mom taught me to say nothing if I can't say something nice. So I'll remain quite on the Ryan family and just focus on cleaning up all this darn glitter.

in fairness to rex- the QB is a complete project this yearand rex in his tenure hasn't had a legit quality QB to 'manage' the othat being said- its all how they finish- if they are competitive - he may stay-if they fall apart and look bad as they've done the lat few weeks- he is gone

I'd be curious as to how much impact he had on player decisions while Mike Tannenbaum was the GM, and in the time Idzik has been GM. The Sanchez extension was a lost cause, and while they probably got Ed Reed for cheap, I can't see how they'd get any more of a "locker room presence" out of Reed than what the Texans paid $5M for.

Exactly. Until they speak this subject is meaningless.

I think he had input for sure-they drafted a ton of d linemen over the years.Mike was more of a cap 'specialist' rather than a personnel guy

That would explain a few things...

Is this the thread we'll be on for the games today?

Bucs-Panthers and J-E-T-S-Dolphins for the early games, and Broncos Chief (surprise, surprise) for the late afternoon game.

There was no time for the engraved invitations because of the holiday weekend.

It's a J-E-T-S thread.

God - I hope not.
