Sampson hanging by thread

Three days from Kelvin Sampson's D-Day: Sampson has produced a team that not only has a shot at the Big Ten title, but a team that has a chance to make some serious noise in the NCAA Tournament. And there's almost no chance he will get to coach them beyond this game. We'll know for sure by Friday. But at this point, Indiana has to do what's in the program's best interest, and that would be to cut ties with Sampson and move on.

Thats OK we will be in the Final 4 with or without him. We have the cry baby Mr Eric "I turn the ball over than most teams" Gordon

NCAA continues to pimp young kids talent in sports to obtain wealth and power from the networks and corporate boardrooms. Ending a man career over calling a young kid, what a joke. NCAA just keeps on incorporating High Tech Slavery in America.

February 20, 2008  09:44 AM ET

you are exactly right. if a coach cannot call a kid to show interest in him, what can he do. The NCAA is becoming a joke and they try to run it like the mafia, with so many stupid rules

wow free education from top tier universities = slavery, ok.....

You're missing the whole point here....The NAACP is planning to file suit because of the connotation implied by "Samson hanging by a thread".

So..anyone want to take a stab as to where Kelvin lands next?

February 20, 2008  01:01 PM ET

If the stories/rumors are correct - he must go, period. Unfortunately, it appears that IU needed this public attack to rally around and get their season together.

As an assistant coach for the New York Knicks.

I'd love Isiah to come coach the Hoosiers. IU folks could definitely identify with him. Knicks fans want him there anyway.

February 20, 2008  08:43 PM ET

they wouldnt let Isiah come watch a game at IU let alone coach them. he is a cheater and a worthless addition to anyone's team. he shouldnt be coaching anywhere

Granted, the NCAA is a money-making empire with excessive power. I won't pretend to defend them or their asinine rules.

BUT, the following are facts, not opinions:
1) Sampson did get Oklahoma into serious trouble over recruiting violations.
2) He took the IU job and a lucrative coaching contract on the agreement that he would abide by NCAA rules and run a clean program.
3) He broke his word to both IU and the NCAA and broke the rules repeatedly.
4) IU will bear the brunt of the punishment from the NCAA for this as did Oklahoma.

Conclusion: He broke his contract and should be fired, whether the team is winning or not. I'm an IU alum and I don't care how much success they are enjoying this year, the price in lost prestige and integrity is excessive.
Sampson should go.

As for where he will coach next: where are Jim Harrick and Clem Haskins coaching? Sampson would fit right in as an assistant.

February 21, 2008  09:13 AM ET

I agree pwings. If a student was suspected of NCAA infractions, the school would sit the student. By not at least suspending Sampson the impression is winning comes first.

Kelvin will probably land as an analyst on some lower tier cable channel. I don't see him back in coaching for a couple of years. One thing the NCAA could think about doing is suspending the coach who committed the violations for a period of time. Imposing sanctions against the college is one thing, but it doesn't stop that coach that committed those rules infractions from going out and getting another job somewhere.
