Manny's last Red Sox hurrah?

Sometime this week -- maybe today, maybe tomorrow -- Manny Ramirez is expected to arrive for the start of his eighth season with Red Sox. It could also be his last. When Ramirez checks into camp, will it mark the unofficial beginning of the end? The landmark eight-year, $160-million contract signed with the Sox after the 2000 season is complete when this season is over. The Red Sox have options for both 2009 and 2010, each worth $20 million and the team must make its determination no later than the first week of November prior to each season. Expect that they will take all the time they need, because this won't be an easy decision.

Manny will retire a red sock guaranteed!!!

I would take that bet. He and the Sox have tried to get rid of eachother multiple times.

Manny will put up crazy numbers and be "Manny" this year to make the decision a tough one. Its his style.

The worm always turns with a player, sooner or later.

The Red Sox have worked overtime for 8 years to keep Manny happy and now Manny will be learning how that works when the shoe is on the other foot.....

Manny has no choice but to stay. He's a horrible fielder and at this stage in his career could only survive in the field on a daily basis in the tiny left field of Fenway. Unless he wants to be a full time DH somewhere else.

Now that they are testing for steroids, expect Manny the Nanny Roidee to get less or nothing because all of his numbers will go way down.

If he has a decent year , then the Red Sox will almost be forced to pick up the option, or pay big on the FA market... Like the article says, not much for power hitters in their farm system..

Maybe he'd have even better numbers if he hustled a bit and traded in the baggy pajamas and heavy extensions. Much as I loathe the guy and love to see him fail, Boston's success with him on the team is undeniable. Granted, he was less a part of the equation last season than he has been in the past, so maybe the time is finally upon the Red Sox when his talents are finally outweighed by his toxic personality.

I have no doubt the Sox will pick up his 2009 and 2010 options.

Huh?

Manny will wait until the Sox exercise their option an then get busted for DWI, possession, etc. -- in other words, be Manny. As I have stated previously, there is no clown quite as amusing as Manny.

boo

Erm, yeah, because Manny has such a history of run-ins with the law.

Are any of these comments the least bit grounded in reality?

I agree..Redsux and Manny will resign...but before that actually takes place we will also get to enjoy the annual drama of "Trade me, trade me" and him checking out for a couple of weeks with a "slight hamstring pull" while he pouts. It also pisses me off to NO END that these latin/hispanic ball players CANNOT seem to show up to spring training on time because of "personal business".

February 20, 2008  11:14 AM ET

Manny did not request for a trade once last year, for what it's worth.

Also, for the Red Sox at least, the reporting date is today. So, Manny should be/will be on time.

I also expect that Manny will manage to have one hell of a rebound year,.... players frequently do that in contract years, eh? With Ellsbury and Pedroia setting the table and a healthy Papi just ahead of him, I look for Manny to go at least .300+ with 35 HR and over 100 RBI,.. and he's capable of better than that. With Youk and Lowell hitting behind him, he'll see some pitches to hit.

And as I keep pointing out, it will be the Red Sox improved offensive production,..... rebounding Manny, healthy Papi, emerging Ellsbury & Youk,... that will make their starting rotation that much better. I'm conjuring on the number seventy-five here,..... 75 homers between Manny and Papi,... and 75 wins for the starting five. The rest oughta take care of itself.

Prediction:

You-killus will NOT have the season he had in '07. He does not have the skill sets to be a consistent performer at that level.

And for my Redsox fans...correct me if I am wrong (And I am not), didn't Manny take himself out of a few games in '07, like he does almost every year?
