07:27 AM ET 12.02 | Of course, he has a microphone and, of course, he's not afraid to use it. In the first Coach's Corner since the hockey broadcasting landscape was forever changed earlier this week, Don Cherry pleaded his case to the Canadian public -- and his potential future bosses. "I know I'm good," said the 79-year-old Saturday night. "I didn't fall off a turnip truck. I know everybody watches. So all I'm saying is, take it easy. Don't try to ruin a good thing. Just leave us alone, and we'll be just as good next year." Cherry's future on Hockey Night in Canada is hanging in the balance following the National Hockey League's decision to sign an exclusive 12-year, $5.2-billion national TV rights contract with Rogers Communications. The deal, announced Tuesday, kicks in next season.

I'm going with the turnip truck angle.

Hmmm, more plaid than plead.

If Rogers Communications thinks they can make money off of him, they'll hire him. If not, he had a nice run.

though not a huge 'grapes' fan....why mess with what seems to work?

I love this guy. What a windbag. Kathryn Tappen is quite a bit better to look at, but 'grapes' is a blast. It's like a comedy skit on Hockey night in Canada. We need to start a 'Save the Grapes' movement.

A cable company that owns the Leafs? What could go wrong Don?

There you go. Grapes will be crushed when he is fired. The only question is will he wine or just go vinegar with his comments?

I think you're confusing it with "Battle of the Blades".

Amen, brother. Don Cherry is the televangelist of hockey. He's got a huge following and, they'd send him their last dime ... if he'd ask.

Not on Cherry's account they aren't. They're losing money because they're lousy at what they do.

Nice! But, I think it'll be just be a case sower grapes if he isn't hired.

It's an old story. Why try hard to do a decent job when the public trough is inexhaustible?
