Cubs will challenge for Tanaka

07:25 AM ET 12.03 | When -- or if -- a new posting system is finalized between Major League Baseball officials and their Japanese counterparts, it is expected that the Yankees and Dodgers will figure heavily in the bidding for Masahiro Tanaka. However, executives from two clubs that expect to at least participate in the bidding said to keep an eye out for the Cubs. An executive for one of the teams said, "They are my stealth candidate here to be really aggressive." The theory: The Cubs are loaded with as many high-end position prospects (Albert Almora, Javier Baez, Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler) as any club, but do not have pitching anywhere near that. They have tried to sign their best prime-aged starter, Jeff Samardzija, long-term, unsuccessfully, and probably will have to trade him.

The most important question in this situation is: how old is Tanaka?

He is from Japan, so he is already 14 hours older than he would be if he were born in the US.

Just turned 25 this November.

When MLB and the japanese officials decide on the new terms of such deals, it could very well be the highest bidder thing is out the window. That is the hold up. The player will choose which team he wants to play for. MLB trying to make big money teams harder to just step in and control this process....
