Jordan Lynch is No. 2 in latest Heisman poll

08:56 PM ET 12.03 | After the release of the latest Heisman Trophy poll, the top two candidates are Jameis Winston of Florida State and Jordan Lynch of Northern Illinois with the rest of the field dramatically far behind, suggesting this is a two-horse race heading into the last weekend before ballots are due. Some voters are holding out until the last minute, both with each quarterback having their conference championship this weekend but also with the ongoing investigation surrounding Winston in regards to a possible sexual assault charge stemming from late in 2012. There is an element of character involved with the Heisman, so some voters may hold that against him and are hoping for some last-second clarity before casting their final vote. As a result, this weekend still leaves potential for Lynch to come in and take the Heisman trophy after what has been an incredible season in De Kalb.

This thread needs a good hijack:

What I fear is that that group of guys masquerading as our defense who showed up in Ann Arbor last week will show up again this week. We will go as far as that group takes us. People are playing the "rivalry" card to explain last week's moral victory by Big Blue. But this Bucknut is not having it.

Let me tell you...you never give up 602 yds and 41 pts to anybody much less your rival. There are some serious deficiencies here and that should not be the case going into game #13. Urban better walk on down the hallway in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and speak to Waterboy about his performance. I would suspect he has taken over the defensive duties for this game and the NC (if we make it).

I am baffled why the 2-time B1G Offensive Player-of-the year, Braxton Miller is not getting ANY Heisman love.

December 3, 2013  11:56 PM ET

Heisman. Give it to him.

Given how offensive football is trending in the NFL Lynch may have a future as a backup in SEA or SF. He is also clearly the best player on an undefeated team, and he isn't involved in a sordid cover-up type of story. Might as well be Lynch this year (and for FSU your guy is a FROSH if he ends up being as pure as the driven snow he has 2 more years to win it).

The Bucks are short-handed on experienced LB's and DB's, BB. That's part of the problem. Shazier is the stellar LB, but I haven't been too confident in the play of Curtis Grant and Josh Perry. They have trouble with pass read keys and do not cover RBs on screens and flats very well. Christian Bryant's absence at safety is glaring. His replacement, Cory "Pitt" Brown, has not looked good out there either. He's not an aggressive tackler, IMO.

So I don't believe it's all on Fickell's head, and he can't make the tackles himself. However, Luke admitted in a post-game interview that the D was hyped up and overplayed their gaps. Overpursuing leads to the constraint plays that TSUN countered with. But you can't play base all the time; stunts have to be taken in opportune situations. I believe that if the Bucks' D just plays within themselves that they'll be okay Saturday night. The key will be the DL play. Spence, Bosa, Hale, and Bennett are solid. They will determine the outcome of the game, IMHO.

One would think that B. Miller might at least get an invite to the Downtown Athletic Club, River. I'm guessing the snub has to do with the overall perception by most of the CFB "experts" that tOSU- and by extension, Braxton- hasn't played anybody of note to warrant notice. That and the fact he was out 2 1/2 games due to injury. Frankly, I think he prefers to fly under the radar; the less hype, the less distraction.

I'd be okay with Lynch as a candidate. I've seen his stats and highlights. He's the real deal at QB. It might be time to give the MAC a little recognition.

Lynch currently holds four NCAA football records:

Most rushing yards by a QB in a season: 1,815.
Most rushing yards by a QB in a single game: 321.
Most 100-yard rushing games by a QB in a season: 12.
Most rushing yards per game by a QB in a season: 129.6

Impressive stats, by any measure.

If AJ McCarron does not get the Heisman this year I will have lost all respect for it. The Heisman will be a joke. IMHO.

Uh I dunno. I hear you. I think he should be in NY for sure. This is one yr where there is not just a clear cut favorite. It would have been Winston but with the rape stuff hanging over his head he will not get it. The award is not supposed to be a lifetime achievement thing so that works against AJ and Jordan Lynch.
Default give it to Andre Williams.

I too have wondered about this but am okay without it.

The Heisman was "a joke" last year when T'eo didn't win it.

A lot of people do not look at the whole package of AJ McCarron, the Leadership aspect, the on and off feild achievements. This year I believe has been his best year yet. Hes was surrounder by very good talent, but I must say compared to the last two years , the talent surrounding him was not as good, but he still brought them to 1 Second of completeing the season undefeated. The offensive line was rebuilt, TJ Yeldon playing with turf toe all year, and AJ seemed to be the one constant performer through out. I believe he is a lot better then he gets credit for. He bailed Bama out many times this year when things where not clicking. The aTm game being one where he was force to push the envelope, and did it with ease. I also believe he set the blue print for other teams to beat aTm.

2012 Walter Camp Award (player of the year): Manti Te'o, Notre Dame
2012 Maxwell Award (outstanding player): Manti Te'o, Notre Dame
2012 Bednarik (defensive player of the year): Manti Te'o, Notre Dame
2012 Lombardi (best lineman): Manti Te'o, Notre Dame
2012 Bronko Nagurski (best defensive player): Manti Te'o, Notre Dame
2012 Butkus (best linebacker): Manti Te'o, Notre Dame

(and no sophomoric imaginary girlfirend jokes please. That train sailed..)

I too believe that A. J. McCarron is better than the general perception.

As for the topic, I'm pleased to see Lynch receiving some recognition. There are several players whose 2013 performances should be noted in the Heisman discussion, and yet, they garner no public notice.

While I agree, some of the reason is Saban's "process". I think they AJ will be a better pro than he has been college QB. Saban's "process" hasn't allow him to show everything he's capable of IMHO. The "process" is designed to showcase RBs, Oline and all defensive positions.

The Heisman already is a joke and has been for a long time. When the supposedly best player in college football routinely can't cut it in the NFL, it's clear the voters don't have a clue what they're doing. If Lynch gets the award this year, he'll just be the latest stat wizard to secure himself a nice contract and a bench to warm for a few years in the NFL.
