New frontrunner for Cano

07:32 AM ET 12.04 | Could one big deal painted in pinstripes lead to another? [With Jacoby Ellsbury] set to arrive in New York Wednesday for his physical, after essentially agreeing to a stunning, seven-year, $153 million contract with the Yankees, [Robinson Cano] departing The Bronx for the Pacific Northwest seems like more of a possibility than it did 24 hours ago. ... [With] Ellsbury set to draw such a huge paycheck and the Yankees still in need of two starting pitchers, their threat to stick at seven years and $170-ish million for Cano seems more legitimate. So if the Mariners, profoundly desperate for offensive production, offered, say, eight years and $214 million for Cano? Another $44 million guaranteed, when Jay Z is trying to establish himself as a force in athlete representation?

If the message is not clear to Robby by now, I seriously question his intelligence.

If he can do better than $180MM over 7 years then good luck to him. The Yankees have clearly drawn a line in the sand. Bad move from his agents starting where they did. Hard for them to save face now.

So it's like the Yankees trading Cano for Ellsbury? The Yanks lose in that deal. Unless they get Cano back, they have not improved that offense at all.

.....yankers could not lay off the koolaid, which is great news for the rangers....worst nightmare is they became a smartly run club....but instead now return to old ways....angels of the east here they come...

Empire State Building or the Needle? It's his choice!!!

agreed. If I had to choose, I'd rather have Cano at $200 mil than Ellsbury at $150 mil, understanding that both are terrible contracts.

7 at $153 for a guy who has trouble staying on the field to give up Cano, one of the best hitters in baseball who rarely missses a game? I don't get it but as an Orioles fan I love it

Yankees are about to sign Kelly Johnson which makes re-signing Cano look even less likely.

yep, Ellsbury or Cano is really a not a tough choice. Still don't understand why they only offered Cano only 7 @ 160, then sign Ellsbury for 7 @ 153?

One of the massive mistakes Anthopoulos made was letting Johnson go. Good signing.

I think he's way underrated.

I just hope that Ben Cherington doesn't panic and go out and do something stupid right now, just to appease the pink hats.

This is just a bad dream. Paying Ellsbury for 7 years of extended spring trainings and rehab assignments is just a bad dream. I'm going to wake up any minute now.

Oh, you mean the rapper wasn't the best choice to negotiate a monster contract? Shock.

I believe he prefers the term rap mogul.
