07:35 AM ET 12.04 | Shrinking win totals in consecutive seasons inevitably lead to questions about job security, which is where Dana Holgorsen found himself until Tuesday. Finally, on Tuesday, WVU athletic director Oliver Luck spoke to the issue of Mountaineer football via a release. It was as expected. It was what the Gazette has been foreshadowing for its readers. It was all Luck: a measured statement released after consideration. Judging the initial feedback through social media, the statement satisfied very few Mountaineer fans. ... In short, Luck is telling all he's sticking out his neck for Holgorsen. He's telling Holgorsen he's sticking his neck out for Holgorsen. Sure there's a costly buyout if Luck wanted to fire the coach. Where there's a will, however, there's always a way. Instead, Luck is trusting Holgorsen to recruit better players.

How long before schools quit getting into crazy buyout packages at the beginning?

It seems to me they would be smarter giving more money to attract someone for a shorter period of time....instead of being tied up when it doesn't work out. JMO.

Good luck with that since its all the rage. Hell, Jimmy Sexton is having a masterful 6 weeks that will make him enough money to buy an island in the bahamas while his clients scare their employers into giving up mo' money, mo' money, mo' money.

Actually, Luck tied himself to Holgorsen when he forced players-HC Bill Stewart out and hired Mr. Comb-over. I wonder if Oliver's luck has ran out for the Texas AD gig?

Sounds like Luck is pulling a Dodds, "I'm leaving, he's your problem now."

You gonna fire Patterson already. He's only been on the job for a few weeks.

No NC yet? He gone.

The Grass is Always Greener ... except when it isn't, as Oliver Luck has discovered. He had a decent head coach who actually was loyal to WVU in Bill Stewart. He went with a short-term hired-gun in Holgorsen who will leave for a better job if he succeeds ... or will need to be fired with a huge buyout clause if he fails. Why programs like WVU insist on renting coaches is beyond me. It is a lose-lose proposition for them.

They should have gone to the SEC and would be winning a national championship this year!

Some say Auburn isn't a destination HC job because the boosters, fans, and admin are head cases. They want Gus to jump to UTx (if offered the job).

Well, I say West Virginia is the poster child of dysfunctional boosters, fans, and admin, and Holgorsen should feel right at home amidst them.

Sorry, I didn't see that Texas hired Patterson... my bad. Thanks for setting me straight. So, Luck is doomed to stay at WVa, at least for a while. That's even better he gets to stand there and take the heat for Holgorsen's performance.

Gene Keady was Mr. Comb-over. Dana is just sporting a reverse fade.

A mediocre coach, coaching a mediocre program. I don't see the problem. Does WVU honestly believe some "big name" coach is going to be heading to Morgantown if they dump Holgorsen?

Depends on how you define "big name". I could easily see Bobby Petrino or Jim Tressel taking that job.

Morgantown West Virginia might be the worst location for any college player to go to to play football or basketball. Morgantown is a dump in the middle of Deliverance country and Hee Haw heaven filled with Hillbillies. Just a sad depressing place to live.

so you divorced your sister, packed your bag, and got out...good move

Luck needs to let it be known to the power brokers that he'll get rid of Holgorsen this time next year, if it falls flat again.

No muss no fuss. Wait... that's Florida.

We have plenty of fuss about Mus, don't you worry.
