Inside Hurricanes' RB battle

The expectation internally is that Miami will continue rotating Javarris James (who must improve his 3.7 yard per-carry average) with Graig Cooper (5.5). Shawnbrey McNeal, Derron Thomas and perhaps Lee Chambers also would get opportunities.

all of these backs are amazing, I personally like shawnbrey McNeal, i think he is sort of a dark horse but out of all them i think Graig Cooper will get the starting job but i would feel comfortable with any of these backs starting the backfield. Can't wait for the season!

College football will return to normal next year with the Hurricanes returning to the throne!

It is FANTASTIC to feel the energy building once again down in Coral Gables, no doubt about that! The tide has turned and we are DEFINITELY headed back to prominence. Let's be patient though, although our upcoming crop of talent from here on out is going to be ridiculous, we're gonna have a lot of youngsters on the field next year and may make some mistakes as a result. Next year will be another rebuilding year (but FINALLY headed - heck, STREAKING! - in the right direction), it'll be '09 before we're a true powerhouse again... but with Randy's clear recruiting ability, LOOK OUT NATION WHEN THAT HAPPENS!!!

As to the topic.... I thought Baby J was a HUGE letdown last season. I expected big things and he didn't deliver. He looked slow and lacked the good vision we saw in 06. With the explosiveness and raw-ability that Cooper showed last year (maybe our only bright spot of 07), and the power runs of McNeal when he came in, I think James will lose his starting spot pretty quick.

Hey, too many backs (and too many QBs for that matter) is a nice problem to have now though, right fellow Canes fans? ;)

Congrats, UM. It looks like Randy was the right man for the job. I also think he's trying to get rid of the "Thug U" image and mindset.

i wasnt impressed with james last yr..he looked a step slow to me.we r stacked at RB though!! GO CANES!!!!

February 20, 2008  10:50 AM ET

I'm sorry to state the obvious here but you guys always get a crazy amount of talent and you just had a wonderful season. Shannon needs to prove that he can coach and win (not just be buddy buddy with his players) before you guys get too excited. You wont go to a bowl again next season....

February 20, 2008  10:58 AM ET

canes will be in a bowl next yr.im sayin 3-4 losses though.but watch out for the following yr!!

February 20, 2008  11:01 AM ET

Good to see the U back int the headlines...

"canes will be in a bowl next yr.im sayin 3-4 losses though.but watch out for the following yr!!"

Yep, exactly. Next year is too soon to predict greatness (too much youth on the field), but by 09 Miami will be back to dominating the college football landscape once again. And with the way Randy recruits, it may very well be the start of another dynasty run.

But not being in a bowl game again? Cmon now, MSFC, that's ridiculous. The talent of the incoming class alone would get us in SOME bowl, combine that with FINALLY having a QB who's worth a dang (even if he is a freshman) and one of the nation's most talented defensive units and we will EASILY be in a bowl. With the bluechip talent we're gonna once again have on the field we could surprise people and make a great run next year.... but I am keeping expectations realistic for now, '09 is when great things will start happening once again.

And just to make you a bit more informed when it comes to The U, we hired Shannon for his ability to reclaim South Florida recruiting (the thing lost most under Coker that caused our fall to mediocrity), and he has done that in one quick year. This class (ESPN's #1) is the start of a run that will bring this program back to the top of the hill. Just watch and see!

February 20, 2008  11:12 AM ET

Can anyone tell me if these RB's are any of Shannon's **** kids?

February 20, 2008  11:14 AM ET

I know Javarris James is a legacy, being that he is the cousin of Edgerrin but Graig Cooper gives the Canes the best shot at winning. That kid is a threat to break one every single time.

February 20, 2008  11:23 AM ET

5 RB'S all vying for carries = none of them are studs. See USC and their 7 five star RB= for crap running game situation. If they can't find a QB they could have 20 RB's and they're not going to win.

February 20, 2008  11:54 AM ET

If I were you 'Cane fans...I would be wary..Donna Shalala will find SOME way to screw things up

February 20, 2008  01:01 PM ET

i wonder who the QB is going to be next yr?? its got to be marve im thinking right??

February 20, 2008  03:19 PM ET

"If they can't find a QB they could have 20 RB's and they're not going to win."

We have Robert Marve taking the reigns next season (and supposedly has been phenomenal in practice the past year!) with two of the top QB prospects pushing him, one who is 30-0 in high school and coming off a national championship.

Needing to find a QB is not our problem anymore (thank god!), our 'problem' now is we have too many talented Qbs! ;)

February 20, 2008  05:25 PM ET

I don't know about their RB's, but I watched Robert Marve play several times in high school. If he keeps his head on straight and keeps working to improve, Miami will be set at QB for the next few years. Marve is the real deal.

Can't wait 'til Miami and my Noles get back to their rightful places among the nation's elite.

eyeswide open...is he a dropback type of passer or more athletic type of guy?? i havent heard much about him except hes good

February 20, 2008  08:41 PM ET

Cooper didnt get enough carries last year to prove he can shoulder the load. I think James would be a better guy coming off the "bench" if u can call it that. Lets see what Coop can do when given the full time chance...

is the U finally back - god it just seems so long ago - that that VERY, VERY late flag gave osu a win. Are the QBs as good as rumored
