Mets' interest has cooled on Nelson Cruz

02:53 PM ET 12.04 | Few free agents available come with a higher risk than that of outfielder, Nelson Cruz. The powerful slugger has emerged in recent years to be one of the top offensive forces in the game, but sustaining that has become a question mark thanks to Cruz's 50-game suspension regarding performance-enhancing drugs this past season. Add in the Texas Rangers, his former team exercised a $14.1 million dollar qualifying offer on Cruz (which he declined), teams have been reluctant to take the risk considering his hefty salary demands, former PED usage and forfeiting of a draft pick thanks to the qualifying offer. That seemingly includes the New York Mets, who have reportedly "cooled" on Cruz.

Nice to see common sense at work. Contracts for bums like Cruz are exactly what has bogged down the Mets for years. Granderson yes, Cruz no. Good work Sandy!

It's because they're going to give Granderson a 3 year deal. The Mets will be broke afer that.

They have money, they just don't want to spend it. If they gthrew away 7.25 on Johnson they have money. Just off the top of my head they had Santana (20 mil after a 5 mil buyout), Bay (16 mil), Buck (6 mil), Codero (6 mil) come off the books from last year plus a bunch of minor players that probably equal about 5 mil.

He could sign a minor league deal to play in Houston.
