07:24 AM ET 12.06 | Recently declared a free agent, catcher J.P. Arencibia may soon have a new home. The Texas Rangers are talking with the agent for Arencibia, a source confirmed Thursday night. Arencibia, who turns 28 in January, was made a free agent on Monday when Toronto declined to tender him a contract. He was going to be eligible for salary arbitration for the first time this winter. Arencibia would be a classic "buy low" free agent. ... [He] he has never come close to realizing projections that were set for him. In 1,392 major league plate appearances, Arencibia has compiled a .258 on-base-percentage. Over the last 60 years, it is tied for the 10th lowest among 1,941 non-pitchers to have at least 1,250 plate appearances in a career. Arencibia does, however, have power.

Not good when your OBP would make for a mediocre BA...

He can't hit for.....well, you know the rest.

If his defense is good and he can hit around .250 or so the Rangers probably would be happy with him.

He can't even get his OBP up to .250 though.

Being from Toronto I can tell you that this guy rarely hits the ball, but when he does it's likely to have some juice on it. He strikes out alot. He is distracted easily but the fans, the media and most importantly opposing pitchers. He seems like a guy that is playing his first game every game. His defense is horrible. Frankly, this guy is not a professional.

I live in Toronto and I have watched JPA play a lot and I can tell you for certain this guy is not worth anything to any team in MLB. He cannot hit the ball. He strikes out very often. His defense is horrible. He does not throw out base stealers. He is not a smart baseball player. He is not an athlete. He cannot run. He has very limited upside - if any at all. I suppose he is a nice guy and a good teammate, but who wouldn't be if you were the least-skilled guy on the team. If, and I mean IF he hits the ball it may go out of the park. To all teams close and afar: stay away.

I got news for you alacran. He only had 18 doubles last season. In comparison, Saltalamacchia had 40 in fewer AB's.

I'm not buying that he's a far better catcher than Molina. I'm not even buying that he's a better catcher than Molina. There's a stat that was compiled by a local reporter here in St. Louis. The same pitcher has a full run lower ERA when Molina is catching him than when any other catcher is behind the plate. That's any pitcher Molina has ever caught. Dave Duncan wasn't the only magic St. Louis had going for its pitchers. There's a reason no one has noticed Duncan left. Molina learned everything Duncan had to teach.
