07:26 AM ET 12.06 | The Bay Area is full of business dreams come true, and this one landed on a football program. A dozen years ago, in a classroom on the Cal campus, seeds were planted for the $18 million Memorial Stadium field naming rights deal. ... [AD Sandy Barbour] said at no time did the university consider selling naming rights to Memorial Stadium itself. That option "was never on the table." Field-only naming deals still are fairly rare in collegiate sports, and Cal's is the richest on a per-year basis. Cal will earn about $1.2 million on average per year, more than Maryland's Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium ($800,000) or Akron's Summa Field and InfoCision Stadium ($250,000). John Wilton, Cal's vice chancellor for administration, said the money will be invested in the stadium endowment fund."

Frankly, an opportunity exists here. The Church & Dwight Company should brand it "Trojan Field" at Memorial Stadium, and to avoid confusion, include the right to prominently display their product brand at centerfield.

It wasn't exactly a naming rights deal, but Joe Jamail gave about $200MM to UTx and got his name on the field.

Heck, Red McCombs gave $150MM and just got the north end-zone named after him. Tom Hicks gave $75MM to get the stadium gates named.
