not bad timing for him. The Wings are in shambles right now because of all the injuries they have. If he can play anywhere near the level he played at before last season, then he should be able to fill Cleary's spot while he is out, at the very least. He may not score the goals Cleary has right now, but he can certainly fill the checking role and maybe fuse the team with a little bit of energy - fresh blood type thing. As much as Downie took care of Laperriere's dirty a&& the other night, you can bet McCarty would have got his hands dirty that night too. This team needs some grit, and if he can still play, McCarty could be the guy to bring some of it

he should only take Drake or Downey's place in the lineup, no one else's...it'll be good to see #25 back on the ice, he never looked right in a Flames jersey

hahaha, Pete, that's a beauty. I think he tends to cross over into Windsor for that kind of stuff though - the laws are a bit more forgiving on this side of the border

its not a comeback from retirement - its from exile. No team wanted him until he cleaned himself up in his personal life. Plus, he's not the impact player/potential Playoff MVP that Anaheim got...twice

so what if he's not a potential mvp type... your complaints about the poor guy who was on the roster before, the need for a deadline for these late signings should still be the same... no? oh wait, you're a redwing fan?...

doesnt matter if he's an mvp type. the wings deserately need a big, physical body on the blue line and he provides that. You dont always need an mvp to complete your playoff roster, just a guy that needs to fill a certain role. Mac does that, and did that in the past with the wings.

so you think its a Red Wing bias? Again, McCarty wasn't "contemplating retirement" so he could avoid playing the season, putting himself over and above the league and its history, the way Neidermayer and Selanne did. McCarty wasn't in the league this year because nobody signed him/wanted him. There is a difference between choosing to not play until mod-way through the season and teams choosing for you. If Jason Allison got offered a contract tomorrow, I'm sure he'd take it (and we'd get the treat of watching him perform in more shootouts, hahaha), and that would be a similar situation to this one. To compare McCarty coming back from alcohol and gambling problems to Neidermayer and Selanne's selfishness is ridiculous

in my opinion the ducks held neidermayer and selanne out for half the season in a ploy to be able to free up cap space for the season and get some more players signed. then they both conviently decided to come out of "retirement" and sign a small contract to help them with the playoff push. could just be my wierd way of thinking, but that makes alot of sense if u ask me...

im not claiming to to be true... just merely speculating from my point of view here. but honestly, u saw the turn around the ducks made after those 2 both came back to the ice. u basically have ur 2 best players with "fresh legs" from not playing half the season. Its currently not against the rules to do what those 2 did by any means, but u really think its fair to let ur 2 best players sit out half the season to stay healthy for ur playoff push?
maybe its just my red wings bias and the fact that the ducks knocked us out last year, but anyone who sees the situation cant help but think that there is just the tiniest possibility that this could have been worked out prior to the season just so they can get a repeat year. Face it.. its hard enough to win a cup, and even harder to defend one...

This would be great pickup for the Wings. It's smack you in the forhead obvious that the reason they lose every year in the playoffs is cause their finess team gets a little too roughed up. McCarty is the perfect player to come back to Detroit and beat a little skull and get some teams thinking twice before they blindside Datsyuk or Zetterberg. Not to mention that he is loved in Detroit.
