08:42 AM ET 12.08 | Two Texans team sources who spoke to NFP Friday evening on condition of anonymity, said things had been unraveling for a while. Perhaps most troubling was the "lack of discipline and 'smarts' on the team," and alluded to the 14 penalties at Jacksonville on Thursday evening. No one to whom NFP spoke suggested that Gary Kubiak, regarded as a good man, had lost control of his locker room. But neither did anyone blame injuries and the sudden plummet of quarterback Matt Schaub for the downfall.

One could argue they were never really all that, unless smoke and mirrors Kubiaks 61-64 record there since 2006 is the new gold standard. That 10-6 record in 2011 was the first time in their club history as Texans they reached double digit wins.

Where the writer sees decline, I see spinning wheels.

The headline's only purpose is to trap you into reading an otherwise bad article.

At least we're not stuck with another Bengals-Texans tilt in the first round.

I think the decline was from a strong sense of optimism to a strong sense of pessimism. There never really was an achieved height.

To be fair, the last two years the team has been a Super Bowl contender. Last year in particular, the team was pretty damn good. This season has been an unexpected farce.

Be fair? Ah, heck, where is the fun in that?
