Coco not crazy about sitting

Unlike Jacoby Ellsbury, the up-and-coming rookie who said all the right things about the Red Sox' center-field competition, Coco Crisp made it clear yesterday that being relegated to the fourth outfielder spot would not be desirable. Though he stopped short of demanding a trade on the first day position players were required to report, Crisp made it clear that was a possibility, depending on how the competition goes.

Well....another point well taken. You do not want to sit and wait your turn becasue maybe the people in charge think you are not as good as the starter? Makes sense to me that someone needs to do something to get better so that they can be the starter.

GREED IS GOOD. You start you make more, so do things to get better playa.

If not, then just come to work and do your job because you be getting paid well anyway and most likely you are being overpaid!

I would tell Coco to relax, nobody seems to realize that the kid replacing him has almost no experience and he could win his job back if he outplays Elsbury. Especially if Coco gets back to his previous consitent hitting. Its possible that an injury could happen to any of the outfielders as well. We talked yesterday about Manny always being out for a little while during the season.

Coco's feelings are understandable,.. but it sure would be cool if he could remain as the 4th OF. I've alluded to an elaborate platoon system in which Crisp spells each regular outfielder one day per week,... provides a late-inning defensive replacement for Manny,... fills in for injuries,....pinch runs and pinch hits,,,, and is on hand to step into the OF fulltime if anything happens to Ortiz and Manny gets shifted to DH. That's a lot more than a bench position. I hope Francona is reading this. Crisp has a lot to offer,... speed,.. switch-hitting,... awesome defense,,... and he seems pretty determined to pull his offensive numbers up. The 4-OF system would seem to be well-suited to Francona's obsession with keeping his players rested, eh? Manny doesn't mind missing a day,.... Drew is usually somewhat injury prone,... and Ellsbury is still learning the ropes,...... Crisp could get in plenty of playing time,.... hardly a bench role at all.

Sad that players do not try to win their spot back by outperforming their competition..Who says Ellsbury can do it for a year?..Kevin Maas looked like Babe Ruth after 100 at bats, Ellsbury has 51...

Coco is a good lad, but considering his situation, I would have thought reporting early to Spring Training rather than waiting to the last minute might have been a smart move.

It was his job to lose and now he has to win it back. Make it a hard choice on the field Coco and forget about yapping to the press. They have nothing to do with the process.....

Coco is going Loco because he found steroids in his Crispy this morning.

Boston, not crazy about starting him.

February 21, 2008  12:19 PM ET

if he's as good as he thinks he is, then he won't be sitting; if he's sitting, then he's not as good as he thinks he is. he should be grateful he's drawing a very nice salary from one of the better [top 4] teams in baseball -- maybe he should ponder Milwaukee or Kansas City [see other T&R section]

Parisle

Francona needs to lay out a 4 outfielder plan where everyone gets plenty of playing time. With two injury prone corner outfielders, he needs a good fourth outfielder. Manny's getting older and should be rested against the easier competition.

This is just Coco being Manny.

and RSB...being well, RSB

Crisp will be part of the trade that bring Blanton to the Sox. I think the Sox will also give the A's 2Mil. towards Crisp's contract.

February 21, 2008  02:30 PM ET

Is he planning to take a long vacation after this season?
He's gonna miss a big party... if he leaves.

February 21, 2008  02:43 PM ET

Well Coco I don't think it's very desirable for you to be hitting near 300 with the Indians and hit near.030 with us. But his glove is great so keep him as a defensive replacement and for some speed. unless a good trade comes along. I really like Coco but we invested too much into him for him to be performing at the plate the way he has.

CardsFan2,...

Thank you for backing me up. I think the revolving 4-OF system is a great way to keep the players rested, while making best use of the team's obvious depth. If only it would make Coco happy, eh? Anyway, I thought it was a good strategy,... right up Francona's alley, too,.... and Crisp would easily get into 100 games. I'm a big Ellsbury fan, but hell, it might be Jacoby making the fill-in rounds while Crisp remains the incumbent in CF. Everything depends on their offensive output at the start of the season. But either way, the 4-OF plan just makes sense to me,.... it isn't pitched toward anyone's ego,... it's a strategic use of personnel. The Red Sox could break some new ground here in terms of team dynamics. I love innovation.

Ummm,... Luvdatdurddywatta,,....

Ellsbury had 116 regular season at-bats and hit .353. His post season was another 20 or so at-bats,..... and he hit .438 in the WS. Where's this 51 at-bats stuff coming from? Jacoby played a quarter season, all told,...... not a bad sampling, I'd say.
