An untouchable in Seattle

07:33 AM ET 12.10 | Former Mariners reliever Jeff Nelson, for one, hopes Seattle isn't done making moves this offseason. They can't be done, some say. Just adding [Robinson Cano] wouldn't be enough and a poor investment in their huge investment. "He fits anybody's lineup, but the question is, what are they going to put around him because that's not enough," Phillips said. "What's next?" What likely won't be happening next is a trade of top pitching prospect Taijuan Walker. The hard-throwing right-hander has been coveted and mentioned in almost every trade possibility for the Mariners, particularly a possible deal for Rays' ace David Price. But general manager Jack Zduriencik quelled some of those rumors. "I don't have any intentions of trading Taijuan Walker," Zduriencik said.

Who the hell is Philips?!?!? I thought they were quoting Jeff Nelson???

IMO, the Mariners will never be a top team in the AL West, until they get rid of GM Jack Zduriencik.

They've got a decade to compete. Might as well wait it out.

LOL, as an Mariner fan I have been saying that for the last ten years. Why has Oakland won the AL West the last two years with a smaller payroll. It's because the A's have a good GM. IMO Jack Zduriencik is "NOT" a good GM.

Does this mean that King Felix is available?

Were you looking for a well written 4 sentences? Shame on you!

Yeah, IMO Felix was foolish to sigh a big contract with Seattle. I will be very surprised if the M's ever win an AL West title while he is there. It's funny that they had to put Houston in the AL West, so the M's wouldn't/couldn't finish in last place. :-)

Anyone who signs 30+ player to 7+ year deal is an idiot and should be fired right away. Days of juiced players having quality seasons in to their 40's is over. Nowadays, only players over 36 worth signing are lefty relievers, and veteran starters who wins with control, not velocity(2-3 years). If you want to lock a players with 7+ years, do it to avoid arbitration and while under your control, not when they are on FA market.

That is probably smart. Only time will tell.

same thing the D'backs GM use to said about Justin upton except,,,,,the team still traded him!!

December 10, 2013  10:59 AM ET

now if the marinbers are willing to work a trade for Price at the right amount of players,,i can see Price going to the Mariners, because you know right?Felix hernandez not enough and the japanes pitcher its really good except the team still short in that area, with Cano a board the lineup still remains weak!!!!

Recent reports are appearing to be very accurate it seems...

and the mariners GM may had throw away his last opportunity with the albastros contract given to
Cano,or do i am wrong???

but things could switch for the worse this season (14)astros could finish fourth and the mariners fifth
even with Cano in mariners lineup!!

the more they wait the more difficult to get credibility in their business!!!

the Cano signing really wasn't the brightest idea out there. Teams don't generally pay big bucks for a 2nd basemen, and at 10 years, just not a great deal. Hope the other 7 position players can hold water, they couldn't last year

December 10, 2013  12:45 PM ET

Lots of holes to fill before they'll contend.

If they're not committed to short term and long term spending to fill those holes they'll miss their opportunity window with Cano. He won't be a top player for 10 years.

Hope they like spending $24MM per for a formerly great player from 2018 or 2019.
