04:42 PM ET 12.10 | Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik was stretchered off the ice on Saturday after being on the wrong end of Boston Bruins forward Shawn Thornton's cheap attack, which led to a very scary scene on the ice. Thornton has been meeting with the league to determine his punishment for the incident, while the Penguins placed Orpik on the injured reserve list on Monday. As we learn more about Orpik's condition, it is being reported that he suffered a concussion from Thornton's punches and he also suffered memory loss that caused him to forget the incident on the ice.

I wonder how Eriksson is doing

BS...they wouldn't have let him fly back to Pittsburgh if he was in that condition. This is just a spin to tack on more games to Thornton's suspension.

I've seen nothing that said he flew back to the Burgh. He could've drove from Boston. Thornton deserves all the games he gets suspended for!

I like Thornton...but I agree...he deserves whatever he gets on this one..totally out of line

The hit by Orpik on Eriksson was deliberate and to the head. Watch the replay you can see Orpik raising his shoulder into the hit into Eriksson's head. Orpik and Thornton should have the same amount of time suspended. Punk likes to take a cheap shot on Eriksson, but is unable to stand up for himself on the ice when going face to face. Orpik should have been ejected from the game after that hit on Eriksson. He will think twice before taking another cheap shot on someone else on the ice.

Thornton deserves a lengthy suspension, no question. You can't hit a guy if he is down on the ice and completely vulnerable like Orpik was. Thornton lost his self control. I've never seen that him snap like that.

I will also say that Orpik's hit on Eriksson was a head shot and the second cheap head shot Eriksson has received in just 6 weeks. A penalty should have been called at that point and the entire incident would have been over.
Since the refs didn't make the proper call, Thornton felt like he needed to send a message that that the Bruins protect each other, and that headshots are not ok. Orpik should have fought Thornton when he was confronted the first time. Laying a head shot and then not answering for it is pretty low, and again the entire incident would have been over at that point.
Instead the refs assessed Thornton a penalty when he tried to initiate the fight and Orpik shied away and Pittsburgh scored on that power play. I again fault the refs on that one. They didn't provide justice the first time by calling a penalty on Orpik's head shot and then gave a penalty to Thornton who was trying to make Orpik answer for it.
Obviously Orpik didn't deserve the beating he received, but he should have been willing to take the fight with Thornton in the firt place if he is going to be laying headshots on people. Eriksson is also out with a concussion, and no one knows how long he'll be out. There were terrible calls and nocalls throughout that game. The refs deserve considerable blame for letting that game get so out of hand, but ultimately, Thornton needs to maintain self control even if he is frustrated with the player and the refs.

Wasn't a headshot. Wasn't a dirty hit. Orpik doesn't need to fight over a clean hit.

Looked clean in live time.

Thornton deserves whatever he gets, but the Pens announced that Orpik flew back with the team.

Of course it's FN. Let's talk around each other again, with some trolling and mass homerism mixed in to propel another hockey thread to the top.

Dirty- no
Clean- no

I think we can concede that the only ones who think the hit was dirty is Boston fans. Fine. It is to be expected. No one is going to change their perspective, until a similar hit (no doubt it will happen) is layed out by a Bruin, and then they cry: "CLEAN!"

Neal's hit was dirty and unnecessary, and I am a Pens' fan. Neal also lied to say he didn't mean to do it. That I will also concede.

But Thornton also lied in his ridiculous statement ("It???s hard for me to say much more other than it was not my intention"), and with his crocodile tears. Pathetic.

and even it was dirty...punching a guy already down is about as cowardly as it gets

And it won't be the last one, either.

Oprik hit Eriksson square in the chest. The only reason it was questionable was because the puck bounced over Eriksson's stick and could have been called interference.
