Gordon blames Dodge for penalties

07:10 AM ET 02.21 | Robby Gordon will appeal NASCAR's penalty of 100 points, $100,000 and a six-race suspension to crew chief Frank Kerr for presenting an illegal nose for inspection prior to Daytona 500 practice Feb. 8. Gordon, who had a week earlier announced he was switching from Ford to Dodge as part of a technical partnership with Gillett Evernham Motorsports, has said that Dodge's distributor accidentally sent him a prototype Dodge nose that had yet to be approved. The difference is the approved nose has a slightly bigger area that is indented around the headlight than the unapproved nose.

Man - what a bummer for Robby. Sent him all the way back to 40th in standings after a great finish at Daytona. This guy cant seem to catch a break recently. (rooting for the 1 car team)

February 21, 2008  08:17 AM ET

I agree. He did a great job at Daytona. However, is he just playing dumb here?

February 21, 2008  08:27 AM ET

Who me? It was a nose from a minivan...lol

February 21, 2008  08:32 AM ET

Yeah, ya know, I think I can see both sides. it would be cool if he could get some R&D parts, and see if they work. He may have been paid enough to make it worth his while. AND, he, just joining the Dodge boys, may not have realized it wasn't totally up to and touching legally.
There were some tough penalties from the weekend...

February 21, 2008  08:52 AM ET

But surely his crew chief or builders would have known right? I'm probably playing dumb here and not realizing it. Stokcarfan, you're saying that he knew but was given a fat bonus for testing it anyway? If that's true then money sure does talk and makes you walk.

February 21, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Nascar just got carried away with the penalties and suspensions yesterday. I think they were completely unnecessary and extreme.

February 21, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Hoo,
No, I'm just making goofy remarks. I can't see it. Hoping to get some people to jump on and make really stupid comments. Being a single car team, I think he really wants to prove himself. He may have known and is playing ignorant. That is my real guess. You are right his team would have checked the templates...

February 21, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Is it just me or does NASCAR have a vendetta against Robby? He seems like the most penalized dude ever and they seem to screw him whenever they can, like last year's Busch race in Montreal.

February 21, 2008  10:00 AM ET

It's FRANCECAR, it's all about the Benjamins. Single and small operations will be a thing of the past in 5 years.

February 21, 2008  10:22 AM ET

Mr Canuck - His behaviour last year in Canada deserved heavy penalties. Do you think Nascar screwed him during the race itself?

February 21, 2008  10:43 AM ET

They did screw him in Montreal

February 21, 2008  11:13 AM ET

I think he deserved the Montreal race penalties....and I am no fan of his ...BUT......my question is, how can this happen with Nascar officials checking everything you do so closely......and......how can his crew not make sure it was the right thing......so easy to confirm before you get into a penalty situation.......
People should have learned from Mikey's 2007 Daytona fiasco.....and I mean here, that smaller or new teams can have their year ruined and never fixed, if they start off this badly.
I find it hard to feel compassion for Robby, but ,this raises a lot of questions IMO

February 21, 2008  11:23 AM ET

I've never been a Robby fan either, but he does seem to take the worst from NASCAR. I wonder if he ever did wrong to one of the France daughters or something. They do seem to just beat him to death.

February 21, 2008  11:34 AM ET

What's so irritating about this is that the new nose fit the COT template, and provided no aero advantage.

February 21, 2008  11:39 AM ET

I am not a RG fan by any means, but 100 points and 100K is excessive for a car that never touched the racetrack. All he should have to do is prove that the parts were sent from the distributor. this carries very serious weight because of the top 35 rule.

February 21, 2008  12:30 PM ET

New nose,Jet fuel, has this sport gotten that bad that it has come down to this? Come on boys, I realize there is a lot of money at stake here. There are also a lot of young impressionable fans out there that see what's going on. Play by the rules or don't play at all..

February 21, 2008  01:30 PM ET

I think this one is way over the line. Such minor differences in the nose from what was said. Just a few indentions for a little different look. I'm no Robby Gordon fan, but this one bites. I'm sure they (NASCAR) knew her was a perfect chance to stick it to him, and they did. So much for back to the basics and all that hype. I'd love to see this one overturned.

February 21, 2008  04:04 PM ET

Unfortunately, this is what happens when you're the factory experimental team.

February 21, 2008  05:47 PM ET

Its not going to happen nascar doesn't reverse penalties.

February 21, 2008  06:39 PM ET

Well I'm a Robby Gordon fan and NASCAR is way off the charts on this one. Ya ever get the feeling that the "Bad Boy" imagine has a run over from season to season? This and the other penalty handed down to Junior's Crew Chief on the Nationwide side is some more of Francecar at it's best. God help the next guy(s) who make errors in judgement or mistakes in showing up for inspection with the wrong parts. I'd expect somebody will end up getting the boot for the remainder of the season, unless they are among the chosen few. What a crock NASCAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
