Bears likely to let Cutler walk

07:25 AM ET 12.12 | Goodbye, Jay Cutler? Unless [Cutler] is willing to take a club-friendly deal on his next contract, the Chicago Bears are likely to let Cutler become a free agent in the offseason, a source said Wednesday. The Bears would do that even at the risk of losing him. "(The Bears) believe in (coach Marc) Trestman after what they've seen from (backup quarterback Josh) McCown," the source said. "Between his system and the two big receivers (Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery), you have a system where a quarterback can flourish. I don't know if McCown is going to be the starter (next season), but I think the team would be fine letting Cutler test the market and then go draft someone if he left." The goal for the Bears is to not overpay for Cutler, who could be looking for a deal in the range of $20 million a year.

Cutler isn't worth anywhere near $20 million a year.

December 12, 2013  08:18 AM ET

They can tag him but then they're on the hook for almost $15mil for next season when you need to spend some money on D, especially with Tillman and Jennings entering free agency. I like Cutler. I really don't want him to go but they have to look at how the offense is playing now, how much they would have to spend to keep both QB's, and look at their other needs, especially run defense (although a ton of guys are hurt and out for the season).
Most importantly, I don't want my Cutler jersey to be past it's expiration date.

Cutler does have a great arm.....but he definitely needs to go to a team with a good oline.

First, Jeff George had a great arm as well. Second, Cutler couldn't get it done in Denver with a good O-line, BM and a coach that thought the sun shone out his ****. He simply is NOT a franchise QB, an elite QB or a 1st-tier QB.

Compare his TD/INT ratio this year to McCown's or QB rating. He isn't worth $20M, but that doesn't mean some stupid owner will pay him that.

Trestman can make Cutler worth the $20M. Cutler has one of the best arms in the NFL. He has the heart of a warrior. Make the 20 mill ladened with incentives (including playing time) and the road to the playoffs will be all Cutler's.

Spend $20M on Cutler or spend $20M on 4-5 really good players?

That isn't hard to figure out - especially with McCown playing well. And - THAT is the important thing here.

He's gone at that price.

Tennessee?

$20M is a lot to pay for 100 ints and 24 fumbles

Josh McCown never lived up to his hype before playing for Tressman. In his system Josh is flourishing. Cutler will make the Bears better than the Pack in future. You will see.

Excellent point!

Bud Grant was like Tressman was a CFL coach before getting to the big league.

McCown looks like more of a leader on the field than Cutler does. Cutler kind of reminds me of that SNL character Debbie Downer. Wah-wahhhhh.....
