Eakins' candid confession

07:40 AM ET 12.12 | This was a matter of Dallas Eakins telling like it is. The first-year head coach of the Edmonton Oilers admitted Wednesday he's now coaching the team he has -- as opposed to coaching the team he wants it to become. In questioning from your correspondent, Eakins confessed he's not coaching the team the same way he did at the beginning of the season. ... "I came in and I had a way that I thought this team was going to play. 'This is how we're going to play.' I thought it was important to stick with that. But then, when you get to learn your personnel a little bit better, you can do one of two things as a coach. You can dig your heels in and say 'We're going to play this way!' But if your group isn't suited to play that way, I think that's pretty damn stupid of the coach. You have to adapt."

First 10 games 3 - 7. Last 10 games 6 - 4. No one cares how you do it so long as you do it.

He had to learn to coach soft players not willing to back check

After watching Randy's blunders in person last night, taking something and turning it into yet another nothing, I would give anything for Dallas to be coaching in Toronto. Damn you Brian Burke.

kinda like that Rivalry matchup that NHL network was pitching for Chicago Philadelphia. Got even better when Lavi was part of the infomercial; and then Illy gets drubbed 7-2.

Dylan Macilrath gets the call up tonight.

Have they started the Federal Investigation into Clarkson stealing money from the Leafs?

Still 11-18.

They count on folks to accept small surges...

It's a smart coach that can adapt. But sometimes they do a little too much finagling. I think sometimes Babcock does this. He gets away with it in tournaments because of all the talent, but a little too much other times.

I think Randy's doing what Eakins tried to do at the beginning of the year. Problem is Randy's too stubborn to change and make adjustments. Some coaches' egos will not allow then to adapt, change or adjust. It's 'my way or the highway.'

Good for Eakins. He just went up even more in my esteem.

He was so terrible last night. I defended that signing to the death but oh boy...

Would you like some ketchup with your crow?

No stealing involved here at all. This is a purely voluntary donation by the Leafs.

It could be worse, Dallas: you could be a season ticket holder to the Panthers. They've already started boarding up the windows at BB&T...

Not giving up on him yet. But he's got to figure it out soon.

Hate to say it but, his potential has its limitations. He's a big body with some skill. But, he'll never go far beyond "some."

And when did Chicago/Philly become a rivalry?? That was quite a stretch on the NHL Network's part.
