Wilson draft is no gimmick

07:28 AM ET 12.13 | On the surface, it makes little sense that the Texas Rangers would select Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson in the Rule 5 draft, but there may be more to it. This wasn't simply a case of the Rangers wanting a little publicity or paying a decent price for a motivational speaker. (Though they'll get publicity now, and again in February or March, if Wilson does come to spring training.) [Jon Daniels talked to Wilson on Thursday] morning and made it a point to tell him the club isn't trying to distract him and won't be bothering him until after the football season. But Wilson is excited he was drafted and told Daniels he wants to come to spring training. If the QB does, I'd expect him to do more than walk around and chat with the players like some dignitary.

The guy is an outstanding competitor!!!

Since they ran off the last guy that provided a lot of motivational talks, maybe this is in some way a replacement, though light years away from Nolan Ryan, but a start nonetheless.

A 2 sport player?

Don't think so.......I beleave the players agreement says no.

Dave Winfield was drafted out of college by the NFL the NBA and MLB. Now that's an athlete.

I agree. If Wilson is lucky he can win a Super Bowl this year and then maybe pursue a baseball career.

True but Wilson could be the next 2 sport star in the Danny Ainge tradition.

I don't remember Ainge playing anything other than basketball.

Look up his stellar careeer with the Toronto Blue Jays

Jameis Winston is talking about doing the same thing.

I'm not a fan of these quarterbacks playing multiple sports. QB more-so than any other position is a full time commitment. They need to train and most importantly study the position year round to play their best.

You think guys like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady take months off from studying the game?

IMO he's hurting his team by picking up a second sport.

Possibly the biggest reason R.W. is a darn good QB, is because he is a very good baseball player. Him winning the SB this year, trading in the helmet for the glove. Works for me! I wish you all the success in the world on the diamond. Just please, please stay away from the football field.....Sincerily diehard 49ers fan. Lol!!!
