The star-crossed career of Illinois backup center Brian Carlwell ended Wednesday when he announced plans to transfer. The 6-foot-11-inch sophomore from Proviso East started to fall out of Illinois' plans when he suffered a severe concussion as a passenger in teammate Jamar Smith's car when it was involved in a one-car accident Feb. 12, 2007.

We could use you at Ball State. Badly.

Probably didn't want to play with his teammates that left him for dead in a wrecked car for 30 min while they tried to get their story straight. I wouldn't either. Weber - you've become a total joke. Jamar Smith - you should be in jail.

Over/under Weber is coaching there next season?

February 21, 2008  04:01 PM ET

Weber is cry baby, I wouldn't play for him either. He needs to get over the Eric Gordon thing. The kid was from Indiana...hello?!?

February 21, 2008  05:07 PM ET

Weber will be there next year. Carlwell should just move down the road to Eastern Illinois. They could use him, and he would star in the Ohio Valley.

Weber looks like he's crying in that picture.

I'm at U of I so i gotta defend him:

Duany- Jamar should be kicked out of school at the very least but nonetheless him and Carlwell are best friends. Whenever I see them on campus their always together (engaged??). But seriously, if the guy who was almost kill by him can forgive him you should too. Most people don't know this but Jamar was literally suicidal that night and for the days after. This is his best friend and he nearly killed him.

THE TRUTH- You are not very sharp if you think Weber is going to be fired between now and 2011. the knock on him was that he couldnt recruit but hes finally got some big time players coming in.

Actuary1- The situation isn't as simple as 'oh hes from indiana so obviously he chose them'. no. he repeatedly told weber he was committed until signing day was a couple weeks away. and now its coming to light that sampson mightve cheated when recruiting him (and also not telling weber about their contact, not illegal but very ****-like).

TenRingsSTL- Carlwell was useless before and after his accident. He has size and some skill but his complete lack of motivation and aggressiveness erase his potential.

why did it * out ****?

He needs warmer weather

February 22, 2008  12:55 PM ET

DuJuicenn - I agree with you on Jamar. If Carlwell can forgive him, why does everyone else continue to talk such trash about him?

Agree with you on the recruting too.....I think Weber will have them back at the top of the Big Ten in the next couple of years.

You're probably right about Carlwell in relation to Big Ten b-ball......but he would be a fit in the Ohio Valley.....

Actually, he's showing his point guard how to do a crossover dribble from his left hand to right hand.

Couple quick questions for everyone: Now that Carlwell is gone, should Weber try to recruit someone from the 2008 class or defer the scholarship to another class? Should he try the JUCO circuit. I've never been a fan of JUCO transfers and his latest crop of 'regular' transfers hasn't panned out the way I'd like (tho the jury is still out on Alex Legion). Now that I think of it, will the scholarship automatically go to Legion (and is that why he transferred to Illinois - because he knew Carlwell was leaving)?

February 27, 2008  09:43 AM ET

...and Weber isn't crying in the pic; he just got kicked in the groin by the ref.

February 27, 2008  05:10 PM ET

I heard the guy the Illini is waiting for, 2010's Jereme Richmond, got kicked off his high school team for various bad behavior. Can't imagine this guy is going to HELP this terrible basketball team chemistry. Illinois deserves better than the classless Bruce Weber.

Indiana has gotten exactly what it deserved, I bet Eric Gordon is wishing he had stay committed to the Illini now, what a bunch of classless cheaters the entire Indiana program is. Hiring a coach who has broken NCAA rules before to grab a instate prospect already committed somewhere else...at the very least at least Illinois can't be called CHEATERS!!!!!
