07:33 AM ET 12.16 | In the remaking of their middle infield, the Cardinals have found a second baseman to both complement and challenge rookie Kolten Wong. Mark Ellis and the Cardinals have agreed on a one-year contract that will be finalized and announced early this week. ... Wong, 23, hit .303 with 10 home runs 45 RBIs for Class AAA Memphis last summer. That earned him the organization's player of the year award. He struggled when given an opportunity to join the lineup in the majors and moved into a bench role with sporadic playing time. He hit .153 with 12 strikeouts and three walks in 62 plate appearances in the majors, and his postseason was marked by being picked off first base to end a World Series game. The Cardinals sought what one official called "insurance" for Wong this winter.

Allen Craig struggled at the plate for his first few months in the majors. This was as much about improving the bench on the right side of the plate as it was about covering second.

Ellis is still a good defender and can hit some, maybe he can also teach the kid a few things.
He's played a handful of games at SS and 3B, not enough to be consider a real backup but maybe good enough at those positions in an emergency. Not a bad guy to pick up on a 1 year deal.

They'll probably start this as a platoon at second. The Cardinals already have the backup at 3rd and short in Descalso. This gives them two utility infielders; one left handed an one right handed.

You cannot get a line on Wong's performance in the post season because nobody on their roster hit. It looks like you can sing Happy Trails To You number 38.

I don't like the negativity of the headline. I think they believe completely in Wong, but it is just smart to have depth at 2B behind Wong. Many top level major league hitters have struggled in their first year, and that could happen with Wong. It's just smart, it's not a negative regarding Wong at all.

Jackie Bradley is a prime example. He lit it up in spring training and seem primed for the big show last season. Instead, he struggled from the get go and spent most of the season in AAA ball. Still, management has enough confidence in his ability to give him the opportunity to win the CF job next spring.

no it's actually a 3 year deal with ellis. 1 with the cardinals then 2 with the reds when jocketty will sign him. he will be officially a ex-cardinal then and be eligible for the jocketty retirement package for all ex cardinals where they receive over priced 2 year deals for having played for his beloved former team.

Kolten Wong will need to be sended back to the minors, its not use to keep him in the majors just to warm up the bench!!!!
