07:39 AM ET 12.16 | The market for free agent lefty Jonathan Sanchez was bound to heat up this winter, and the Cubs appear to be in the mix. The Cubs envision Sanchez as a reliever, according to a source. Several other teams interested in Sanchez prefer to employ him as a starter -- a role that Sanchez has performed for most of his career. Sanchez has limited left-handed batters to a .218 batting average. Sanchez, 31, threw a no-hitter in 2009 and won 13 games for the Giants in 2010 but has been hampered by control problems. Sanchez has pitched for the Rockies, Royals and Pirates. After going 0-3 with an 11.85 ERA in five starts for the Pirates, Sanchez was released and signed with the Dodgers. Sanchez was 7-3 with a 5.13 ERA in 14 starts for Triple-A Albuquerque, where his fastball was clocked at 95 mph.

He's dirty...

December 16, 2013  09:23 AM ET

Some team will take a chance on him because he is left handed with incentives and minimum salary.

Has the level of pitching fallen that low that teams are falling all over themselves to sign a guy who had an ERA over 5 in Triple A ball? Wow!

He will it right in with Cubs plan

I don't get it. How is he going to get anything more than a Minor league contract that says if you make a team out of spring training you get something?

This is a lame thread.

IF a 0-3 and almost 12 ERA stint with the Pirates isn't enough to scare team away, I don't jnow what is.

A reliever "hampered by control problems"! Hey! Hey! Sounds like the Cubbies have found the perfect replacement for Carlos Marmol!

Yah Mark, too bad Culver's found out about your probation and you lost your job mopping up melted custard...good thing there's still a spot in the Superb Video parking lot with your name spray painted on it.

Jonathan was awesome that 2010, with the exception of Chase Utley brawl. I thought he would be with the Giants for a career, but he did something to mess up his control.

Awww, do my comments irritate you? Good! I think you're the one who probably needs to find employment.

Yah Mark, way to show some spine and stand up for yourself! Yer dad would be proud of ya, or at least he wouldn't hate you quite so much.
But, I did pay ya to swallow and not spit, so you're only getting $5 from me now.

This move would clearly shift the balance of power in the NL Central and move the Cubs ahead of St Louis and Pittsburgh.

And stick it in Pittsburgh's face too for cutting him last year for pitching poorly.

That's a good point. Pittsburgh could look very foolish when this is over.

If the Cubs get Sanchez, I sure hope Mozeliak has something up his sleeve to counter this move.

"Dirty" Sanchez was part of quite possibly the worst trade in Kansas City Royals history. He was horrible. And the worse he pitched, the more he sulked. Wouldn't cover bases on balls to 1st or 2b.
