Coughlin backing embattled OC's 'pathetic' offense

07:23 AM ET 12.17 | As Tom Coughlin will readily admit, this hasn't been an easy season for his offense. But he still believes in offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride. Gilbride has drawn plenty of ire from fans for guiding one of the league's most underachieving offenses. The Giants are the only team that's been shut out in this high-scoring season, and it's happened to them twice. ... But Coughlin indicated Monday that he still believes in Gilbride's system. "It certainly hasn't been a connect-all-the-dots-from-day-one type of year," Coughlin said. "But Kevin's a pro, he's been around, he's done things a long time. We try to find ways to take advantage of things." Coughlin, who had said himself that the offense was "pathetic" on Sunday, seemed to indicate that the issues with the offense did not lay with Gilbride.

With 5 picks it's pretty clear where the issues on offense are.

Maybe if someone on the o-line would block??

Well, fine, if you want to look for OBVIOUS solutions.

For their next game maybe they should hire the 49ers o-line to play for them

Actually the offensive coordinator has been on vacation, how can you blame a guy, when he's not around?

He still has cred with me for punching Buddy Ryan.

O-Lineman always get the blame for the pathetic QB play, ELI in NY nd RG3 in Washington are good examples.

When your QB had thrown 81 interceptions in his last 62 games, how can the offense not be pathetic?

It's a hot mess there in the Meadowlands.

How can a team with this much talent be this bad?

December 17, 2013  10:12 AM ET

As good a coach as Coughlin has been for the Giants, his weakness is his blind loyalty to his staff. Gilbride should have been let go years ago - his play calling is ineffective and predictable. Coughlin has promoted people from within in the past and it did not work out. Time for some major across-the-board changes.

Talent? No running game; O&D lines have been inconsistent; Defense is mediocre; no pass-catching from TE position. And for the receivers, none is having a good year, including Cruz although his numbers are decent. Eli needs to stop thowing into coverage, but really what choice does he have? If he doesnt force it, it will be 3 and out every possession. It is really hard to tell if the OC is doing bad job or a good job as they really do not have a very talented team. Is it the talent, the coaching, or some of both? Please dont respond about this being a former SB team-- this isnt the same team

Or attach robotic exoskeletons and put some kids on the sidelines to operate them by remote control

Yup. Gilbride has been the worst for years. Giants D carried those superbowls versus the Pats outside of a few miraculous throws.

A total of 4 plays has kept Gilbride employed... and some might even say Eli at QB.
