07:46 AM ET 12.17 | This much, we know: Alex Ovechkin is among the most dangerous goal-scorers of his generation, but's he's also a minus player. Ovechkin, who leads the league with 27 goals and is tied for fifth in points with 37, is a minus-11. His linemate, Nicklas Backstrom, is tied for seventh with 36 points, but is a minus-4. Islanders forward John Tavares [37 points, minus-6] is the only other player among the NHL's top 20 scorers with a minus rating. In fact, only 19 players in the entire NHL have worse plus-minus ratings than Ovechkin. So, when Oates says Ovechkin has "room to grow" it's pretty clear what he means. ... [Said coach Adam Oates:] "Look around the league. [Flyers captain] Claude Giroux kills penalties. I'm not saying [Ovechkin] is going to, but why can't he?"

QUOTE(#1):

The guy has like 48 goals in his past 50 games. Shush.

This we agree.

At the very least, have the discussion privately.

+1

Although some on here think everything and everything should be said in public.

Class organizations act accordingly.

Sounds like Oates needs a dose of reality.

Cheerios told me Oates were supposed to be good for you. Did they lie?

December 17, 2013  09:23 AM ET

Why is Oates asking the media when the answer lies from within?

December 17, 2013  09:26 AM ET

"Ovechkin called out by Oates"

Since Ovechkin comes from sheep, one would assume he likes oates.

So, when Oates says Ovechkin has "room to grow" it's pretty clear what he means.

He bought a pair of "fat pants" for Christmas?

Ovie keeps buying too big a cup size?

December 17, 2013  10:14 AM ET

Ovie has 27 goals and only 10 assists as of this posting. So, he doesn't like to play D and isn't a play maker, he just scores goals and lots of them. What part of this does Oates not understand.

It a non issue about his goals to assist ratio. The problem is his team is hurting because the other teams are scoring more goals then Ovi is when he's on the ice which makes him NOT productive for his team. Do you understand?

Exactly! Give me a Talbot who doesn't score much, but has a positive rating over big goal scorer who is negative.

Oh I understand, Ovi is a one dimensional player who only wants to score goals, which means he's a coach killer. My point was, what part of this equation did Oates not understand before he became head coach? Did he really think he'd teach this old dog some new defensive tricks?

I also agree with Burgh-Fan, give me a team full of hard working plus players over a bunch of goal scoring divas any day.

As long as you don't steal their lucky charms.

I don't know. I wouldn't mind having a big time goal scorer if he was on the ice with a solid defensive unit. And, what about the Caps goalies? Ovie might be -11 but how much of that is the fault of the D and goalie?

Sid right now has 19/28/47 and is a plus 4. You want to replace him with Talbot?
