Red Sox unloading a starter?

07:31 AM ET 12.18 | For now, it appears the Red Sox will be handing over center field to Jackie Bradley Jr. While free agent Rajai Davis appeared a logical fit for Boston before he signed with the Tigers, the addition of a right-handed-hitting center fielder would make the Sox's roster somewhat unwieldy. A spring-training trade for the Dodgers' Matt Kemp could alter the equation, but at the moment such a move remains unlikely. ... Perhaps the greater intrigue with the Red Sox is what will happen with their rotation. A trade remains possible -- the Red Sox are checking in with teams that need starters, sources say. Righties Jake Peavy and Ryan Dempster appear the most expendable, but the Sox could get a bigger return if they moved righty John Lackey or lefty Felix Doubront.

I never thought I'd say this, but they need to keep John Lackey.

Matt Kemp would be a great Addition!

I think they'll make a trade eventually but I don't think they are in any rush to do so.

Perhaps. I think it should be Peavy, if one is moved. Restock the farm some, or a CF to platoon with Bradley.

They need a fall back if Bradley isn't ready. He was totally over matched last season and was just OK in AAA. Kid's talented be he may need more time.

A team would be nuts to trade for Kemp until they knew his ankle is healed. That won't be until March and maybe not then.

Surplus pitching is a wonderful thing. The Rays had surplus starters last year and didn't trade them. Good thing when Niemann was lost for the year and Price and Cobb wound up on the DL. I agree - there's no rush to trade them, if at all.

Ok ... I'm starting to feel like Alacran. Anyone ... anyone?

Victorino is their fall back in CF if needed. But I think the kid will be fine if they just give him a chance. Defensively they lose nothing, and I believe the bat will come around. Dustin Pedroia was a bust his first couple of months in the bigs as well, but they believed he would hit and stayed with him. They need to do the same thing with this kid.

I agree, hold on to what you have, it's a long season. Unless of course they believe Pevey or Dempster is holding back a prospect they believe is ready.

I don't like the idea of Shane starting in CF, think that he's really stretched there. He seemed really comfy in right...it's only one game, but I happened to be sitting by the TV cameras in CF for one of his starts there and he looked totally lost. Badly misplayed an Adam Lind drive and just looked hesitant all around...his advanced numbers also look much better for RF than CF, FWIW.

Imagine if the Dodgers had traded some of their surplus starters ... they would have been very, very screwed.

Seems like trading your "surplus" pitchers tends to guarantee that they will turn out to not have been surplus.

Indeed. Pitchers get hurt all the time. You can't assume you are going to get 5 guys who will start 32 times.

Agree about his defense. He looked good out there in CF, and Boston's CF is not an easy one to play. But he was so over matched at the plate last year. I'm not saying he won't work it out, just saying they need to be prepared if he's not ready. He's not a "sure thing" like Wil Myers was.

It does seem to work out that way, doesn't it?

I would agree Victorino is better off in right. But Boston's CF is a tricky one to play. I think he'll look better with some playing time out there to learn it's quirks.
