Trestman open to resting starters Sunday

07:30 AM ET 12.20 | Fans of the Lions and Packers won't be the only interested parties this weekend. Depending on what happens late Sunday afternoon in Detroit and Green Bay, Bears head coach Marc Trestman may elect to rest some key starters against the Eagles on Sunday night. The Bears trip to Philadelphia may mean a lot and it may mean very little. If the Lions lose to the Giants and the Packers lose to the Steelers, the Bears could win the NFC North Sunday night with a win. But if the Lions lose and the Packers win, the division will come down to the Week 17 matchup with Green Bay at Soldier Field no matter what. Under that scenario, the only meaningful outcome of Sunday night's game against the Eagles would be seeding, as the NFC East and NFC North winners will take either the No. 3 or No. 4 seeds in the playoffs.

Do it.

December 20, 2013  08:48 AM ET

Sure. Rest them if you're up by more than 2 scores with 5:00 minutes left in the game. Other than that, they gotta play.

December 20, 2013  08:49 AM ET

Play the game to win! rest in the off-season.

December 20, 2013  09:00 AM ET

......and they ~flexed~ the pats/ravenz out of [SNF] for this ''pre-season'' game,.....??

Look at it as the opportunity to keep Josh McCown warmed-up... just in case he's really needed.

December 20, 2013  09:12 AM ET

This is one of those subjects that was better off not discussed because the who hypothesis depends on Detroit losing.

Remember when Dungy decided to rest Indianapolis, it ruined their chance for a perfect season and they never made the Super Bowl.

December 20, 2013  09:15 AM ET

Most of the Giants and Steelers are going through the motions, not getting injured, and waiting for the season to end.

Let me add a nice bow to this visual...

If the Cowboys win Sunday afternoon, then the Iggles have nothing to gain by playing their starters this week against the Bears. Iggles @ Cowboys the following Sunday is for the NFC East.

So... Enjoy, NBC.

Went down there yesterday for a Division II 1-A championship game (wife's cousin had a grandson playing). Posted on Facebook for a buddy (die hard Packer fan) that there was far better coaching yesterday than what was on the Cowboys sideline last Sunday.

If Cutler comes out firing INT's again, McCown will be needed. Can't give the Eagles offense free possessions. I also don't want it to come down to Green Bay game, you know Rogers will come back for that.
