07:39 AM ET 12.20 | Oklahoma's quarterback situation just became a little more interesting. Former Texas Tech quarterback Baker Mayfield will enroll at Oklahoma in January, a source close to Mayfield told the American-Statesman on Thursday. Texas Tech has not permitted Mayfield to contact the Oklahoma coaching staff, the source said, so the former Lake Travis standout has not been offered a scholarship. He plans to join the Sooners as a walk-on in the spring. When Mayfield would be eligible to play for the Sooners is in question. Under NCAA rules, Mayfield would have to sit out a year after transferring. Big 12 rules also mandate that since he would be transferring within the conference, Mayfield would lose a year of eligibility. ... The source told the American-Statesman that Mayfield will appeal the NCAA' s transfer rule.

Not very clear, huh?

He walked on and shouldn't have to sit out at all IMHO...whether he transfers to another school in the conference or not. Even if it is the land thieves.

Yeah I am not putting too much thought in what the American Statesman said

No doubt. He walked on at Tech this year (and won frosh of the year I believe) and now plans to walk on at OU. Seems to me neither the NCAA nor Tech have any grounds for holding him out a year or causing him to lose a year of eligibility.

FJJ, doesn't his family have big $$$$$$$$$?

Move down one grade and probably be the starter in 14, like North Texas State in Denton, Tx.

I don't know about big $$$ but they are not hurting. Even after the year he had Tech didn't want to ante up to the scholarship table so he's leaving. At least thats the story.

Just a shizotty rule. If neither school has given him scholarship money I don't see how they can do anything to him.

At least two and they have three others playing other positions (WR/DB) that were damn good HS qbs as well...two of which won HS state championships. But they are more dual threat QBs and not as tall...but a hell of a lot faster.

yes. They aren't hurting for bodies in the QB department which may be why they didn't offer a scholarship. Frankly he will have a lot less competition at OU who is hurting at QB no matter what Stoops says publicly.

December 20, 2013  09:54 AM ET

LMAO...there are sweatshirts for sale at Aledo HS that say:

"Dear Jerry,

We heard you need a winner. We will be there this weekend. Hang tight!

Love,
Aledo"

2 shizotty rules, actually. NCAA shouldn't be able to make a kid sit for a year if he has walked on and not accepted one $$ of scholarship money.

BIG XII have an even shizittier rule that you lose a year of eligability if you transfer within the conference. WTFJJ is up with that penality?

I've yet to see a coach get penalized for changing addresses or going to a competiting school. Too bad kids are regulated/penalized for breaking agreements, and the coaches making millions of $$ off of them are not......

SEC has that rule as well.... But I thought it only applied to scholarship players

Being one that is the farthest thing from a rule aficionado, so are you saying that if a player transfers from LUS to UTK then they will sit a year and lose a year of eligibility on top of that? So they're really losing 2 years of potential playing time?

doesn't 0u have 4-5 already on scholly?

Thomas and Thompson were both much higher rated in HS, can't see Mayfield ever seeing the field in Norman
