Smyth: 'This is misery'

07:45 AM ET 12.20 | A few of Edmonton's five straight losses have been of the moral victory variety, but that's not the way Oilers winger Ryan Smyth sees it. "There's winning and then there's misery. And this is misery," said Smyth. ... "Playing good in this league isn't good enough, anymore. You have to be consistent to get results." So is losing in the last few minutes, not 5-0, to powerhouses like Anaheim and L.A. palatable? "That's a loaded question," he said. "As a player who's been around a long time ... no, it's not good enough. Yeah, losing [stinks]." Smyth is as embarrassed by the Oilers current situation as the fans are. He thought the Oilers would be sitting at about .500 now. "The fans don't deserve this," said Smyth. "Same feeling in this locker-room, but we have to be consistently better to get more."

Ryan, maybe try something like this:

Grab some of the floaters by the throat and threaten to give them a colonoscopy with the business end of your hockey stick. You're one of the few guys that has been around long enough to know what it takes. Maybe you could impart some of that knowledge by any means necessary.

As a player who's been around a long time...you should've known better than to sign in Edmonton.

Probably the only team that was remotely interested...

So I guess I'll stand up for Edmonton. They're an easy target based on recent performance but they've a lot more successful than most Canadian franchises.

Since expansion from 6 teams (45 years), Stanley Cup winners:
Montreal - 10
Edmonton - 5
Calgary - 1
Ottawa - 0
Toronto - 0
Vancouver - 0

As an Oilers fan, all I can do is hope this gets turned around. It was a great place to live and get excited about hockey. Maybe again sometime in my lifetime.

Geez, wasn't it just last week you were lauding a stretch were they won a couple? Turning around their season? Folks were loving Coach Eakins?

Bums. The lot of them.

Misery will ensue when management picks the same type of player first overall in the draft year after year.

Said Smyth. ... "Playing good in this league isn't good enough, anymore. You have to be consistent to get results."

Truer words were never spoken. The Oilers problem? Trying to win games by being cute. But being cute with the puck and making 'clever" behind-your-back passes doesn't cut it either. This Oilers team has some very talented players but, they don't have the right kind of players necessary to win in this league. A blind man can see it ... except the Oilers management.

Get rid of some of those grossly overpaid puffballs and get some real men with cohones that aren't afraid to go to the net and score some dirty goals. These spoiled brats will simply not go to the net. They figure skate around the perimeter until they eventually lose the puck. They simply will not shoot the puck until they think it's going to be a highlight reel type play.

Once upon a time, Ryan Smyth used to be that guy. He lived in front of the net but, not anymore and, no one else has stepped up to claim the space he has vacated.

Top three overall picks will keep coming the Oilers way until they start drafting SIZE with some skills. A team of softies and smurfs is doomed to be cellar dwellers forever.

They have skill. What they lack is grit.

May your wish come true. But, management hasn't woken up yet to the fact that the game has changed a lot since the '80s. And, unless they change their philosophy and adjust to the realities of today's NHL, you'll be waiting a looooong time, my friend.

BTW, of the many stupid things your management did in recent years the stupidest was to waste that first overall pick on that useless, pouty smurf, Nail Yakupov, especially when you know your team desperately needs a #1 center and a guy like Galchenyuk is available. Simply insane.
