Providence coach Tim Welsh, one of the sharpest offensive minds in the game, is in jeopardy of being fired after the season if the Friars don't make a late push, The Post has learned from several sources. The Friars are 13-13 and 4-10 in the Big East despite having had to play the entire season without injured guard Sharaud Curry, last season's leading scorer. Guard Jeff Xavier has played the season with a stress reaction fracture that has gotten worse in the last week.

The word "despite" is typically used to show that things are the OPPOSITE of what you would expect. They are having a bad year "DESPITE" the fact their star player is injured? I think the word you are searching for is "BECAUSE". Unless, of course, you think 4-10 is a great success...despite the star being injured.

its so frustrrating being a friar fan. ,They always get some talent, but wheatheir its grades, discipline, injuries, not being happy what have you, those players always seem to leave the program. I think their needs to be a change. I do believe prov can recruit top players, prov is an up and coming city, and they do play in one of the best leagues in the country.

If they fire him, I know another Big East school he can coach at: St. John's University. Norm Roberts has to go, and Tim Welsh knows all about coaching at a small Catholic University.

The should fire Welsh and hire his former assistant Bob Walsh. Walsh is now the head coach at Rhode Island College where they are ripping it up. It's a no brainer.

Played against Tim in HS - tiny school in way northern NY. His teammate was Jim Ace Deshais (pitched for the Astros). He comes from an area of tiny towns and farms. He is from the same area as Pacer's coach Rick Carlisle. Damn proud of Tim. Great guy then - great undermanned coach now. I have no doubt he would hook up with another large school program. Sometimes however its just time for a change for everyone.

Sorry - but had to share the heart felt story lol

Scuse me - THE best league in the country. Dont buy into all the ACC hype.

I want him as the next coach of St. John's University. I think I am going to start a Fire Norm Roberts website.

This junior class looked promising two years ago, but never improved. Guys disappear and reappear in the rotation almost at random (Greedy Peterson would be a Big East all-freshman under another coach). Some pretty talented players have left the program (would've been nice if Rob McKiver, now a star at Houston, and DeShaun White were still here).
Ten years, one postseason win, with some pretty good teams.
With a guard-heavy lineup, Tim still has Geoff McDermott bringing the ball upcourt. McDermott could be all-conference if he were put down on the blocks to use his passing skills.
Tim has been the ultimate tease, winning just enough over the years to get the next contract. He's Lucy pulling the ball away before Charlie Brown's foot reaches it. And PC just lost a Rhode Island kid who verballed to Louisville yesterday because he wasn't sure who'd be coaching here when he got to school in fall '09.
Buy out his last year and move on, fellas.

Cant blame ya J Hova. I recall the days of St Johns under Lou Carnaseca. Man...those were the days of Thompson, Lou, etc.. Its a shame what has happened to St Johns - you would think they would have risen by now. I sure would consider going to NY to plays Hoops. Lou looked great in that sweater.

Hova, you might want to give Roberts one more year with that freshman class he's got and see if he gets more out of it than Welsh. I suspect he might.

Maybe they will hire Sampson. He needs a job now. I'm not sure if they are willing to pick winning over integrity. I'm really curious to see which university does.
