09:37 AM ET 12.22 | The franchise tag remains in play for Jay Cutler. Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery clarified comments he made earlier this month during a fan Q&A about the franchise tag not being the ideal way to keep his starting quarterback. "I didn't say that I would rule it out," Emery said Friday on WMVP-AM's "Waddle and Silvy Show," per ESPN.com. "I said it's not the first thing we would think about in signing players that we like. If you put a franchise tag on a player, that's a player that you like. We like Jay. If you like a player, you want to move forward in a multi-contract year basis, not a short term."

All this to say, NFL.com has no news to report.

If you make the playoffs GM and you are in position to do so, franchise tag is a way out of satisfying your fans and let him hang around one more season.

Hmmmm another article about someone clarifying another bone head statement. Maybe they need to start thinking before speaking.

The should a Christmas present tag an re-gift him to the Panthers.

This team has gotten old quickly on D. That is a bigger problem than the QB situation, it seems.

The D is a problem now, but McCown isn't the long term answer in any case. If they put the tag on Cutler, he won't play well next year. Trestman wants Cutler, Emery is invested in Trestman,. and the Bears will accommodate, working out a contract before putting the tag on Cutler.

Could, won't, will pay him way more than what he's worth.

On his best days Cutler can be surly; imagine his behavior if he's franchised!

HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!

Hail to the Redskins' first round pick, probably the Number 2 overall going to the Rams. The Redskins are terrible, and will likely be worse next year. Why can't the Redskins be as good as the Cowboys? Why?

umm,.....the only ''franchise'' I see in cutler's future = ~Subway~ or Papa-John's''....?!

"Bears could use franchise tag on Jay Cutler"

Why? Putrid performance after putrid performance. Interception after interception. Inability to manage a game. I simply don't care what happens to him. He'll never take us where we want to go.
