07:29 AM ET 12.25 | Buckle up, Jets fans. Delicious holiday-season subplots await in South Florida on Sunday when the Jets play the Dolphins in their finale and possibly Rex Ryan's final game as their head coach. ... Should the Jets beat the Dolphins and finish 8-8 -- two wins more than the Vegas preseason over/under of six -- and Ryan is fired anyway, we know [John Idzik] never had any intention of keeping him beyond this season regardless of results. If this happens, we know Idzik, who took the job a year ago with the understanding that he had to keep Ryan at least for the 2013 season, planned to hire his own head coach (Seattle offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, San Diego offensive coordinator Ken Wisenhunt, Lovie Smith?) all along once he finished (endured?) his one year with Ryan.

In this day of offenses ruling and defenders not being able to hit anyone anywhere, the Jets will be hiring and firing coaches until St. Swithens Day unless they either draft, sign or trade for a franchise QB, or hire a coach that will coach one up. Newsflash Jets, Lovie ain't the guy. Bevell or Wisenhunt could be, but unless that GM gives that team some offense, get ready for the yearly coaching carousel in Jetland. Long gone are the days of the 13-10 and 7-6 game. Gotta be able to win a 41-38 and 37-31 type game. Jets don't have the horses to do that consistently. I'd let Lovie coach my defense all day every day of the week, but I wouldn't let him TOUCH my offense.

Wow based on this suposition story, Detroit better hurry up and fire Schwartz because the Jets are way ahead in the looking pole. I read they are interested in WIsenhutt?

I know all you guys like to mock him, but Rex Ryan is a good coach who did a great job with the Jets this year. The Jets would be making a mistake by letting him go.

And Merry Christmas everyone.

The day Rex is let go is the day the circus leaves town. No one outside of NJ wants to see the circus leave town.

AMEN!!! Vince Lombardi couldn't win more with the offensive "talent" the Jets have. Keep Rex, give Geno some weapons through the draft and free agency and then see what happens. The problem isn't the coaching it's the personnel.

You're right.

Did Houston officially hire Wade Phillips?, he seemed pretty happy last week when Denver destroyed them.

There will be a half dozen Head Coaching jobs available if the owners do in fact fire the coach.
1. Houston
2. New York Jets
3. Detroit
4. Dallas
5. Minnesota
6. New York Giants
7. Oakland

Some of the coaches on these teams may not be fired this year like Coughlin, or Allen.

Both Detroit and Dallas have been major disappointments the last 2 years, true Dallas may get lucky and beat Philadelphia, but I see that as the only thing saving Garretts job.

I think Allens job at Oakland is secure. He did after all come into a disastrous situation.

If Houston does take Teddy Bridgewater like some are suggesting. Then does Houston want a Defensive minded head coach like Wade Phillips or a QB/Offensive friendly QB coach ? The mistake the 49ers made with hiring Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary when they needed a Head Coach that could understand what a Rookie QB would be going through.

If Jerry Jones was smart and true to his team he would trade Tony Romo and rebuild.

December 25, 2013  11:55 AM ET

Merry Christmas to one and all!

That being said, I don't see Lovie Smith in NY. Owners rarely go from one defensive minded coach to another.

If they fire Schwartz they owe 12 million to him. And Wiz will never be a HC again, way too passive.
